Hi all,
Here are a few links we discussed in today's phone call.
http://www.tims.berkeley.edu Is the collision mapping site. Registration is
required, but it's instant.
Here's our research page, which has some of the projects I mentioned, but if
you want more details, especially about modeling and data analysis, it's
probably best to talk to the lead researchers directly.
http://www.safetrec.berkeley.edu/research/
It was great hearing all the activities going on around the country in this
area.
Thanks for the opportunity to take part.
(My Director, David Ragland, is cc'ed).
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need more information.
Regards,
Phyllis

Hi TRB Health and Transportation Subcommittee Friends,
I invite you to visit the Prevention Forum<http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=1rKrxRKJXERFPbNXXcFwV…>, in which Prevention Institute's Larry Cohen discusses the strength and opportunities presented by the landmark National Prevention Strategy, released last week. The recent release of the NPS is historic, says Cohen: "For the first time the nation has delineated a broad, coherent approach to prevention, and made it clear that prevention is critical for improving our health." The NPS was shaped by seventeen different agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Trade commission and the Department of Agriculture. Virtually every department in government is working together to focus on how to achieve health and wellbeing for the people in every US community.

Description:
Healthy communities provide tremendous benefits by promoting physical
activity in placing homes near community amenities to create walkable
neighborhoods, helping restore, invigorate and sustain livable
development patterns. Health Impact Assessments are a practical tool
that can provide a structured process to determine a policy or project's
impact on health, and ensure that policy and project dollars are used
efficiently to provide the greatest benefits to residents. This session
will feature a discussion of Health Impact Assessments, and a
presentation by a city official who used the assessments for their
transportation plan. It will also include a detailed overview of the
Healthy Development Measurement Tool

TRB Health and Transportation Subcommittee: Mission Statement and Scope
of Subcommittee
The mission of the Health and Transportation Subcommittee is to
identify, advance and publish research and information to expand and
improve current understanding and evaluation of the health impacts of
federal, state, regional and local transportation policies, procedures
and actions.
The scope of this Subcommittee includes a wide array of topics designed
to cover diverse impacts and issues related to health, with attention
given to vulnerable populations. Topics include, but are not limited to:
sustainable and active transportation modes (e.g., walking, biking,
transit), mobility, accessibility, safety, freight and aviation impacts
to health, transportation-related air pollution and noise impacts,
social cohesion, other social, physical and mental health impacts, the
distribution of those health impacts in the population (based on factors
including income, race and ethnicity, sex, age and English proficiency),
and the use of health impact assessments (HIAs) and other health metrics
and indicators to advance the consideration of health impacts in
transportation decision-making. The subcommittee will consider
approaches to maximizing health benefits and addressing potential
adverse impacts of transportation planning and policy decisions through
engineering and design solutions.
The subcommittee will fulfill its mission by serving as a focal point
for transportation issues and their health impacts, both positive and
negative. It will do so by reviewing and publishing research, sponsoring
paper calls, developing research proposals and contributing to the
knowledge base, and through the use of a variety of communication
methods. This Subcommittee will bring together a variety of disciplines
(e.g., engineers, public health professionals, planners,
epidemiologists, economists, advocates, elected officials, academics) to
advance the Subcommittee's mission and scope.
