*About the Workshop*
There is a growing interest in and awareness of the role that the built
environment plays in supporting healthy individuals
and communities. Recognizing that comprehensive plans help guide how a
community grows and can support the
development of healthier spaces and lifestyles, DVRPC’s Healthy Communities
Task Force is hosting a hands-on
workshop that will provide attendees with a better understanding of how to
integrate health into their communities’
planning processes. The workshop will be facilitated by *Beth Altshuler
<http://www.raimiassociates.com/db_files/people_135_990778555.pdf>*, Senior
Associate and Epidemiologist/Urban
Planner with *Raimi + Associates <http://www.raimiassociates.com/index.php>*
.
*Attendees will leave with a better understanding of:*
- How health can be integrated into planning (comprehensive plan update,
revised codes and ordinances,
health element, or separate health-related plans like bike and
pedestrian plans);
- How to articulate the health, sustainability, equity, economic,
social, and physical co-benefits of the built
environment in comprehensive plans;
- Data literacy and analysis for both planning and public health data;
- How to think about community health improvements at different scales;
- How to evaluate the pros and cons of different policy approaches to
the same health issue; and
- Best practices for community engagement and communication about
healthy community planning for different
types of stakeholders.
At the end of the day, it is our hope that attendees will feel confident
that they have the tools to initiate or enhance
healthy planning processes in their counties and/or municipalities, with
the goal of shaping the built environment to
support healthier communities.

Hi everyone-
We would love to know how/ if you are using the Transportation and Health Tool. Contact Kate Robb, Katherine.Robb(a)apha.org<mailto:Katherine.Robb@apha.org>, directly if you would like to share your experience. More details are below.
In October of 2015 the CDC and USDOT launched the Transportation and Health Tool (THT). Now that the THT has been in use for a while, the American Public Health Association (APHA) is heading up an effort to evaluate and document case studies of its use and application. If you would like to tell us about your use of the THT, please contact Kate Robb at Katherine.Robb(a)apha.org<mailto:Katherine.Robb@apha.org>.
The THT is a jointly funded effort of the CDC and USDOT. To support the initiative, the APHA is working with the CDC to foster the implementation of the THT through webinars, presentations, case studies, and workshops. The THT is tool that helps transportation decision-makers and stakeholders understand how a state or metropolitan area compares to others across a set of key transportation and health indicators. The tool also includes 25 evidence-based strategies to improve health outcomes and equity through transportation. To learn more about the tool and to use it visit https://www.transportation.gov/transportation-health-tool.
Thank you!

Greetings subcommittee friends,
After abundant consideration, I've decided to step down as the co-chair of
our TRB H+T Subcommittee. It's time to pass the torch onto the next
co-chair, TBD. It's been a wonderful five+ years building and growing our
small but mighty subcommittee with you.
Activities already underway and planned for the subcommittee will proceed
as planned, of course. Ed will continue as Chair moving forward and the
subcommittee leadership team will continue to meet every 6-8 weeks. Thanks
to all of the subcommittee friends for their support and hard work in the
recent years.
Best,
Eloisa
