FYI - The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Office of Planning, Environment and Realty launched a new video, "Building Better Multimodal Networks" to highlight research activities. This video features the many ways that the FHWA is investing in pedestrian and bicycle research to help communities build connected networks, improve safety, promote equity and encourage more people to walk and bike. The video was featured at TRB, is on our Website<https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/hep/hep_research/> and the FHWA YouTube channel<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzY1Iex521M&feature=youtu.be>.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) will host a "Sandpit" workshop (i.e., ideas lab) on April 24-26, 2017, in Potomac, Maryland. The intensive three-day residential workshop will bring together a broad, multidisciplinary group of participants to generate new insights on how knowledge from different behavioral domains, research fields, and national contexts can be integrated for the purpose of advancing cancer control and prevention.
The workshop will specifically focus on integrating knowledge across five key cancer-related health behaviors: tobacco use, alcohol consumption, dietary behavior, physical activity, and UV exposure. At the conclusion of the Sandpit, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) will invite up to five of the teams formed at the workshop to apply for CRUK seed grants to test the feasibility of their ideas.
Prospective Sandpit participants need to submit an application consisting of the following:
* a CV
* names of two professional references
* an 800-word cover letter describing the applicant's interest in the Sandpit
* a visual representation (e.g., diagram or mental model) that illustrates a conceptual schema of the applicant's area of interest
* a letter of commitment from the applicant's organization or institution
All application materials must be emailed to NCI-CRUK-Sandpit2017(a)mail.nih.gov<mailto:NCI-CRUK-Sandpit2017@mail.nih.gov> by February 15, 2017, at 6 PM EST / 11 PM GMT. Additional details about the Sandpit and full application instructions are attached and available at: https://cancercontrol.cancer.gov/brp/hbrb/sandpit.html<http://lists.icfwebservices.com/t/257770/2594073/23756/7/>

>From the Health Effects Institute (healtheffects.org)... a new research funding opportunity has been issued on the health effects of exposure to traffic-related air pollution, noise, and their interactions with socio-economic status... I received the following email text from HEI...
We are very happy to announce that the RFA is now issued https://www.healtheffects.org/system/files/RFA17-1-Traffic-and-Health.pdf
HEI is seeking to fund health studies to assess adverse health effects of short and/or long term exposure to traffic-related air pollution. The studies should consider spatially correlated factors that may either confound or modify the health effects of traffic-related air pollution, most notably, traffic noise, socioeconomic status, and factors related to the built environment, such as presence of green space. The RFA provides up to 4 years of funding for up to 5 studies with a funding cap of $1,000,000 each.
Interested applicants should submit a Preliminary Application by March 1, 2017. Full applications (by invitation only) should be submitted no later than July 15, 2017.
For more information how to apply, check our website: https://www.healtheffects.org/research/funding/application-instructions

Hi!
Thanks again to you both for all your help with YPHT.
After the session and much thinking, I think it's best for the group to be
part of the H&T Subcommittee. So henceforth it shall be known as, H&T-YMC,
the Health and Transportation Subcommittee-- Young Members Committee!
I'm going to put together a steering committee to help form and shape the
group. As I mentioned at the subcommittee meeting, I see it having two
prongs, one focused on research and involving Young Professionals in
TRB-specific activities and the other focused on professionals development
and networking, both at TRB and throughout the year.
I want to create a list-serve to stay in touch with the people who came to
the gathering, and, in the future, to communicate with folks who want to be
a part of the group. To that end, is it possible to get a domain like the
subcommittee has -- so HT-YMC(a)chrispy.net, or is that only possible through
official TRB channels? If it's too difficult, I can always form a google
group, but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks again.
All the best,
Arielle
p.s. Carey-- I meant to tell you, I still regularly turn to, and even
quote, your dissertation. It has made a tremendous impact on my work on
Vision Zero :)
