APHA Highlights
[Safe Routes]Join our new policy platform: Safe Routes to Everywhere
Trails, walking and biking help to advance many societal goals such as mobility, economic
development, health, livable communities and equity. Now there is a national voice for
trails, walking and biking - or active transportation - that reflects this diversity of
affected interests. The Partnership for Active Transportation is a national network of
nonprofit, for-profit and public-sector entities working together to build healthy places
for healthy people by advancing active transportation networks.
We invite you to join us. Sign on your organization to endorse Safe Routes to Everywhere,
the federal policy platform from the Partnership for Active
Transportation<http://action.apha.org/site/R?i=XSUZjFn6ufmcdY0vcLUdfA>fA>. The
partnership has launched a campaign to drive changes in federal policy that encourage
investments in active transportation as critical elements of our nation’s transportation
system.
The lead organizations responsible for developing the platform were Rails-to-Trails
Conservancy, APHA, LOCUS (a division of Smart Growth America representing real estate
developers), the American Academy of Pediatrics and America Walks. The partnership is
using its unique, cross-sector reach to urge officials to create a transportation network
that serves all Americans by leveraging private investment and factoring health impacts
into transportation decision-making.
National Public Health Week a huge success
[National Public Health Week 2014]For almost 20 years, APHA has served as the lead
organizer of National Public Health Week. Every day, APHA works to strengthen the
profession of public health; foster understanding, engagement and support for key public
health issues; and directly influence public policy to improve global health. APHA
champions the health of all people and all communities.
APHA and its supporters had another terrific year celebrating NPHW across the nation. Look
for details and for NPHW stories and photos in next month's edition of The
Nation's
Health<http://action.apha.org/site/R?i=Tz0QdRLcUCpif4jlGtkq8A>8A>. This
year, we were especially honored to receive recognition for NPHW from President Barack
Obama<http://action.apha.org/site/R?i=KtZUKpMwxEwQN0MOp4PNwQ>wQ>.
As a part of NPHW, APHA also hosted a Google+ Hangout On Air about active transportation’s
role in helping the United States become the healthiest nation in one generation. Making
active transportation a realistic, affordable and convenient option for all transportation
users would help reduce health impacts and also promote physical activity, recreation and
environmental preservation. This Google+ Hangout On Air, which will be archived on
APHA's YouTube
page<http://action.apha.org/site/R?i=fCTOiTIKhaEacsgQbqQm3A> at a
later date, featured an exceptional panel of public health professionals, leaders and
advocates who shared their unique perspectives on active transportation. Learn more about

New 2014 Alliance Benchmarking Report
[Safety is No Accident]Tomorrow is the launch of the 2014 Alliance for Biking and
Walking's Benchmarking Report, a massive report filled with data and research on
walking and bicycling in all 50 states, 52 of the most populous cities and 17 midsized
cities. The alliance produces the Benchmarking Report every two years in partnership with
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Healthy Community Design Initiative. The
goal is to comprehensively examine bicycling and walking transportation and how these
trends relate to public health, safety, and social and economic well-being. Benchmarking
is a particularly helpful approach to active transportation issues because it allows
comparison among states and cities while also measuring national trends. The report looks
not only at bicycling and walking levels, but a suite of related trends, such as crash
fatalities, weekly physical activity, transportation costs, air quality and economic
growth. To learn more, visit

National Bike to School day is coming soon
The third annual National Bike to School day is May 7, 2014. The national event is part of
an effort to create safe routes for students to bicycle to school and to encourage more
children and families to turn to pedal power as a healthy way to commute to school. More
than 1,700 schools across the country participated in 2013. Learn how to host a Bike to
School Day event or register your school’s event at
