Interesting, even though a Yankees fan wrote it. At least he used my
childhood train, the D train (it's been rerouted somewhat). DC is quite
walkable, but sometimes I miss NY's atmosphere of walking as a competitive
sport. I disagree about the exercise. Walking multiple flights of stairs
and the distances described is exactly what kept my relatives and friends'
parents going into their 90s in my Brooklyn neighborhood. (That's real
heartland Brooklyn, in contrast to hipsterville.)

I live in Manhattan and walk just about everywhere I go. I walk to work,
the grocery store, my son's day care, most errands, out to dinner, plus
other regular and infrequent places I go. Since we (unnecessarily and
counter-productively) label people by their transport modes, I am a Walker.
