Hi Health and Transportation Colleagues, Many of you may have seen recent advertisements from automotive companies shaming bikers and demonizing public transit (“Creeps and Weirdos” campaign) and coupled with last week’s attempts to strip the transportation bill of dedicated funding for bike and pedestrian programs and projects, it’ a perilous time for active transportation advocates. This bill would eliminate funding for Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School - the two largest federal outlays for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, such as safe, interconnected paths, trails, greenways and routes. These initiatives provide essential support for safer streets and active transportation, which help to ensure health and safety for everyone on the road. Investing in cost-effective, proven solutions to improve health and the economy should be a top priority for our country. It’s time to think differently - to stand up to those who still say the car is king, and to create a new norm.
