In 1997, The TRB and the National Research Council published the proceedings from their conference "Decennial Census Data for Transportation Planning: Case Studies and Strategies for 2000." I've been struggling to get a sense of the history and measurement issues for the CTPP and Census in general. It's a gem.
Volume I provides an overview and summary, while Volume 2: Case Studies goes into some of the meaty, detailed research and applications of the data (Will need a really big cup of coffee and a quiet place for that one). Just thought I'd pass this along...

Attached are the SF 3 table specifications in a somewhat more "user friendly" format. The attribute details have been removed from the Census Bureau specs, so you can get a good idea of all the tables without having to go through the whole documentation. If you want the detailed categories for each of the variables, please visit the Census SDC website at:
http://www.sdcbidc.iupui.edu/
Thanks to the Census Bureau State Data Center Website for re-formatting the Population tables. I worked on the housing tables, and deleted the attribute categories.
SF 3 is expected to be released from June - September 2002.

Good questions.
DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE #2 - #4
The data that will be released MARCH - MAY 2002 are the DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILES #2, #3, and #4. They will NOT include any place-of-work data. They will only include tables such as general means of transportation to work by county-of-residence and place-of-residence.
I just printed out the DP #2, #3 and #4 pages this morning, to see what we will be getting before the general "SF3" data release this summer. The "table shells" are available on the State Data Centers' web site at:
http://www.sdcbidc.iupui.edu/
see the "other news" section, first bullet, to find links to the demographic profiles "DP 2, 3, 4 for 2000". To me, the DP #2, #3 and #4 are the "Best of SF3" tables - - all that's fit to print on three pages, ONLY for PLACES, COUNTIES, etc., NOT for TRACTS.
SUMMARY FILE #3
In terms of SF3, do NOTexpect any flow data (county-to-county or place-to-place). But SF3 will have tract level data, and it will have certain journey-to-work tables of interest, say, detailed means of transportation, households by detailed auto ownership level. Again, ALL SF3 tables are RESIDENCE GEOGRAPHY-BASED.
Again, table outlines for the SF3 are on the SDC web site (above link).
Yes, the TRB-Census web page is (still) accurate in terms of ANY place-of-work or residence-to-work (flow) data being released in early 2003.
There still, however, may be some "special products" that are released later this year. What I'm hoping for is a December 2002 data on county-to-county TOTAL commuters that the Census Bureau is negotiating/working with the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).
I'd also *like* a place-to-place TOTAL commuters in January 2003, but beggars can't be choosers. We will *all* probably have to wait until Spring 2003 for the place-to-place datasets....
cheers,

Please excuse this somewhat basic question, but I'm trying to figure out the
release date for journey to work data (residence & workplace based) by place
(i.e. New England towns).
The Census 2000 release schedule says "Sample Demographic Profile"
containing commuting to work data will be released March - May 2002. Will
this contain commuting data by place?
Will it be contained in Summary File 3 (June-September 2002)?
or, as the TRB-Census webpage states, October-December 2002 for residence
based and February-April 2003 for workplace based data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just received a email that the Census Bureau has begun a listserv regarding ACS issues. As you are aware, the CB plans to have ACS replace the decennial Census "long form."
Here is the link to the CB page to "subscribe" to the list.
lists.census.gov/mailman/listinfo/acs-alert
The first message from the "ACS alert" failed to include the information about the Federal Register notice of Jan 16, with responses due on March 20, regarding plans for full implementation of the ACS beginning in 2003.

Here is the text of the message I received from the CB:
WELCOME TO THE AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY ALERT.
This is the first in a series of periodic e-mail messages to inform
you about news, events, data releases, Congressional actions, and
other developments associated with the American Community Survey.
The American Community Survey is the U.S. Census Bureau's new approach
for collecting accurate and timely socioeconomic and housing
information about our nation and its states, cities, and communities.
As part of the Census Bureau's plan to re-engineer the decennial
census, the American Community Survey will replace the long form in
2010. It will begin full implementation nationwide in 2003, pending
Congressional funding. It will give federal, state, and local
government officials, as well as the profit and nonprofit sectors,
data every year to evaluate programs and chart the future.

I agree with Peter and others who have written to support the CTPP list
service. I believe the cross pollination of ideas has been healthy. As
matter of fact, when I don't have time to read the emails at the office, I
print them and read at home!

I agree with those who have written to support the list service and to point
out the rather narrow mindedness of those who have decided to leave the
list. There is a very easy to use delete button on the e-mail software that
allows one to remove e-mails that are not of interest. I would hate to see
the list become "sanitized" by not permitting or encouraging discussion of
issues, even when there may be controversial views, etc. I agree that the
participants in the recent discussion do not owe an apology to anyone, and
that the list service has actually been used quite properly.
Those who are leaving the list in a huff and peppering the rest of us with
their requests to be removed, instead of using the correct procedure to take
themselves off the list have misused the list far more than any participants
in the recent discussions.
