The Department of Public Health’s Population Health & |
Prevention – Community Health Promotion and Prevention |
Section, located at 30 Van Ness Avenue, Suite 2300, San |
Francisco, is accepting applications for one (1) full-time|
position in class 2802 Epidemiologist to function as a |
Community Transformation Initiative Epidemiologist. |
|
The Community Transformation Initiative (CTI) is a five|
year grant funded by the Centers for Disease Control and|
Prevention focused on two high-level and complementary|
goals of transforming places and empowering people by|
implementing organizational and institutional policies to|
build healthy, safe, and equitable communities, as well as|
on empowering people and communities to implement|
sustainable place-based wellness policies and integrating|
community health workers and youth leaders into community|
mobilization efforts. CHPP is the Section within SFDPH|
focused on primary prevention and public health education,|
and PHP is the Division dedicated to health|
promotion/prevention, clinical care of communicable and|
chronic disease, we well as environmental health and|
emergency preparedness. |
|
The Epidemiologist carries out their responsibilities|
within an understanding of PHP’s CHPP’s and CTI’s mission,|
goals and objectives, in compliance with the funder’s and|
DPH’s policies and requirements and performs duties with|
cultural competence and a high level of professionalism. |
|
SHIFT: Monday through Friday 8:00 – 5:00 |
|
Essential Duties: |
Under the supervision of the Community Transformation |
Initiative (CTI) Health Program Coordinator III and in |
coordination with CTI Management Team, this position |
evaluates and conducts epidemiologic-related work of CTI |
and related initiatives. Essential duties include: |
Serving as lead staff for CTI evaluation efforts,|
study and survey design, study implementation, data|
collection, analyses and report preparation; |
Assisting in planning and designing of program|
evaluations and epidemiologic studies; |
Assisting in developing procedures for|
epidemiological and evaluation research; |
Conducting community-based health surveys; |
Preparing technical reports and maps based on|
surveys and secondary data analysis; |
Providing technical consultation and direction|
regarding statistical techniques involved in|
observational and evaluation research; |
Assessing impact of CTI interventions on the status|
of target populations, as needed; |
Coordinating local data collection and evaluation|
efforts with project leads, community partners,|
funders, and research investigators and requirements|
from other agencies; |
Providing technical advice to public agencies; |
Developing communications media based on studies|
performed; |
Collecting and maintaining data regarding pedestrian|
injury, physical activity, exposure to second hand|
smoke, healthy eating, cardiovascular health|
disease, and other relevant data; |
Preparing statistics and analyzing data as directed|
by senior staff; |
Maintaining statistical records and reports; |
Writing project proposals and specific papers or|
presentations; |
Participating as an active member of the Community|
Health Assessment and Impact (CHAI) Unit; and |
Performing other duties as assigned or required. |
|
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: |
1. Completion of a Master’s Degree program at an|
accredited college or university in Epidemiology or|
related field that includes a minimum of two graduate|
level courses in Epidemiology or two comparable graduate|
level classes in advanced research methodology AND two|
graduate level courses in statistics or biostatistics. |
OR |
2a. Completion of a Master’s Degree program at an|
accredited college or university; AND |
2b. Three (3) years (equivalent to 6,000 hours) of work|
experience within the field of Epidemiology performing|
study design, implementation or analysis. |
|

health, primary prevention and environmental |
approaches to address health disparities. |
Demonstrated ability to be responsive to community, |
supervisor, colleagues and staff. |

diverse team. |
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and |
projects. |
