oh boy. I stand corrected. Ouch!

To quote the census release:
=======================================
The Legacy Version of American FactFinder will be discontinued January 20, 2012.
How will this affect you?
Any deep links into the discontinued system will no longer work.
1. Deep links to specific products from these datasets will not be available:
* 1990 Census
* 2000-2004 American Community Survey
* 2000-2001 Supplementary Survey
* 1997 Economic Census
* 2003 Annual Survey of Manufactures
* 2003 Nonemployer Statistics
2. These products will only be available through an archived FTP format. Instructions on
how to access these archived products will be provided in future updates.
3. All other current and previous year data from the American Community Survey, Puerto
Rico Community Survey, Annual Population Estimates, Economic Census, and Annual Economic
Surveys are available at
http://factfinder2.census.gov<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type…;http://factfinder2.census.gov>.
=========================================================
This means that the data sets in list 1, including the 1990 census, will NOT be on AFF2.
We will have to see what the new deep links mean.
I join the chorus that says this is a very stupid move. They could leave legacy AFF up
there, with no maintenance, for users who want it.

The 1990 data and all data on the legacy Factfinder is not going away (or to FTP access

"The transition from the legacy American FactFinder to the NEW American FactFinder
will continue through the fall of 2011. Data on the legacy FactFinder will be moved to the
NEW FactFinder in the coming months."

I strongly agree with Bob Paddock and Ed Christopher about AFF2 and discontinuation of
"legacy" AFF. I'm slowly coming to terms with AFF2; it even has a few
advantages, but overall the change is a major loss both for the data-using public AND for
us data professionals.
The loss of 1990 Census, except through FTP, will be painful and will definitely further
erode data access for my organization. I'm glad Ed promised updates for how to access
these figures once they descend to the FTP basement.

Poor Ed.
If the Bureau won't even take HIM into consideration, then I know that MY vote
won't amount to anything!

We all knew this was coming but I for one have been in denial. I think
the Bureau is underestimating how the change will affect me.
