The chairs of <http://giscience.geog.mcgill.ca/> GIScience 2016, taking
place in Montreal, Canada, invite the submission of proposals for workshops
and tutorials for review by the organizing committee. The deadline for
workshop and tutorial proposal submissions is January 13th, 2016, with
accepted workshops and tutorials taking place on September 27th, 2016.
Submission for Workshops and Tutorials
All workshops and tutorial proposals should be submitted via e-mail to the
Workshops and Tutorials Co-Chairs ( <mailto:steven.farber@utoronto.ca>
steven.farber(a)utoronto.ca, <mailto:michael.widener@utoronto.ca>
michael.widener(a)utoronto.ca). The co-chairs, along with at least three
members of the Program Committee will review all proposals.
* Workshop and Tutorial proposals due January 13, 2016
* Workshop and Tutorial notification February 3, 2016
* Accepted workshops and tutorials whose organizers wish to have their
workshop's proceedings included in the GIScience electronic conference
proceedings must submit a single volume PDF of their proceedings to the
Workshop & Tutorial Chair by August 10, 2016.
For more details on proposal format, please visit the
<http://giscience.geog.mcgill.ca/?page_id=33> submissions page on the
official GIScience 2016 website, or see below.
Workshops
Workshops should provide a platform for presenting and discussing ideas in a
less-formal and more open way than is possible at the main conference. Thus,
they should provide an excellent opportunity for researchers to present work
in progress and obtain detailed feedback and should have ample time
allocated for discussion and participation by all attendees. Workshops are
welcome on all topics of interest to GIScience attendees, especially on new
and emerging areas of research.
Workshop proposals should be less than 1,500 words, and must include:
* Title of the workshop
* Description of topics
* Scope and novelty of the workshop
* Workshop organizer(s) and their qualifications
* Format of workshop (i.e., one-half day or one day)
* Intended Program Committee (if relevant)
* Highlights (e.g., keynotes, panels, and other modes of discussion)
* Expected number of participants
* Details of any previous related workshops
* Draft call for papers indicating the relevant topics
Tutorials
A tutorial should cover a single topic in detail, lasting either a full
(i.e., two sessions of three hours) or half (i.e., one session of three
hours) day. A tutorial may cover a particular GIScience topic in depth, or
introduce emerging research areas.
Tutorial proposals should be less than 2,000 words, and must include:
* Title of the tutorial
* Description of topics and relevance to GIScience community
* Tutorial organizer(s) and their qualifications
* Format of tutorial (i.e., one-half day or one day)
* Tutorial outline, indicating overall learning objectives and
individual course elements
* Intended audience (e.g., introductory, advanced) and any background
knowledge/skills required
* Required materials (e.g., will you need Internet access, lab access,
or specific software installed?)
* Expected number of participants
Evaluation Criteria for Workshops and Tutorials
Submissions will be evaluated based on:
* Is the workshop/tutorial appropriate for GIScience?
* Is the topic of the workshop/tutorial particularly timely or
important?
* Is the workshop/tutorial likely to attract sufficient participants?
* Is the workshop/tutorial well designed and likely to achieve the
stated goal(s)?
* Are the organizers appropriate for the proposed topic?
* Has a very similar workshop/tutorial been held in the recent past?
Important Note
Workshops or tutorials that receive too few registrations by July 30, 2016
may be canceled by the local organizers.

Mark your calendars! The CTPP Program and TRB Census Subcommittee will
jointly sponsor a webinar on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 from 1-2 pm Central.
Looking for historical census data? Can't find the current census data you
are looking for? Then this webinar is for you!
John Blodgett of the University of Missouri Office of Social and Economic
Data Analysis (OSEDA) will offer a presentation and demonstration of tools
available through the <http://census.missouri.edu/> Missouri State Data
Center (MCDC). The MCDC is a premier site in the country for accessing
census and other public, machine-readable demographic and geographic data.
Topics will include:
* An overview of the MCDC's Uexplore/Dexter software
* Live examples of using Uexplore/Dexter to locate and extract data
with special emphasis on data from the 2010 Census and the American
Community Survey
* Using MCDC custom web applications to look at profile and trend
reports, and to do custom extracts from 2010 Census and latest 5-year ACS
data
* Accessing ACS base/summary tables and metadata using Uexplore/Dexter
* A brief introduction to the MABLE/Geocorr (geographic correlation)
web applications
As a bonus, Penelope Weinberger (AASHTO) will provide an update on the next
CTPP special tabulation, which will be based on 2011-2015 ACS 5-Year data.

Subject: [NHTS-USER] 2016 TRB NHTS Task Force: Call for posters on innovative uses of the NHTS
Apologies for the cross-posting.
Attached please find an announcement for call for posters for the 2016 TRB.
The Task Force on "Understanding New Directions for the National Household Travel Survey" (ABJ45T) is calling for posters showcasing innovative uses of the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) for presentation at the Transportation Research Board's 95th Annual Meeting on January 10-14, 2016, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, in Washington, D.C.
We are particularly (but not uniquely) interested in research, case studies and analyses that use the NHTS (possibly in combination with other large datasets):
* to understand travel of disadvantaged groups; or
* to analyze transit or active transportation modes; or
* to analyze salient environmental or energy issues; or
* to characterize rural trips; or
* to better understand traffic safety; or
* to analyze public health topics related to transportation; or
* for disaster management; or more generally
* to answer questions of interest to MPOs, DOTs, and other agencies.
The objective of this poster session is to bring together planners, analysts, policy makers, and potential users of NHTS data to share / learn about innovative applications of the NHTS. For guidelines on how to present a poster effectively, see http://onlinepubs.trb.org/onlinepubs/tcrp/tcrp78/prestips.htm.
Please email a poster outline consisting of a 200 to 300 words abstract with a title and authors' contact information to abj45tPostersTRB2016(a)gmail.com<mailto:abj45tPostersTRB2016@gmail.com> by Friday, September 4, 2015.
Authors will be notified of acceptance by Friday, September 18, 2015 and will be asked to confirm their participation by Friday, September 25, 2015; at least one author of each selected poster will need to attend the poster session in person. Sales presentations on products or services will not be considered.
This call is outside the usual TRB website and paper review system. Proposals do not need to be submitted using the on-line system and no paper is required to participate in this poster session. For questions, email saphores(a)uci.edu<mailto:saphores@uci.edu>.
