Hi - the TRB paper review cycle is about to begin. ABJ30 and its
subcommittees traditionally receive more than 100 papers each year for
review. Administratively, each paper requires a minimum of 3 reviews but
technically the process works better with more reviews so we assign 5
reviewers to each paper.
As with prior years, members should expect to receive 4-5 papers to review
from this committee. Friends are asked to review 1-2 papers for ABJ30. You
may receive additional reviews from different committees. The review period
is August 15 - September 15.
To help us route papers to the right reviewers, please complete this very
short survey by *Sunday August 13*:
<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5TVKFW5>
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5TVKFW5
Two important reminders:
1. Paper review assignments take place within the MyTRB system. Please
login and check the email you have listed in your MyTRB profile and enter
that same email here in the survey so we can find you.
2. Please login to MyTRB and accept/decline each paper assigned as
quickly as possible. This helps us manage the review process more
efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your assistance - please let me know if any questions

Free Training! Please forward liberally!
We will be in Denver at DRCOG on Tuesday and Wednesday June 27 - 28 to teach
the CTPP 1.5 day short course. Registration is available by sending me an
email. If you would like to reserve a slot, email pweinberger(a)aashto.org
<mailto:pweinberger@aashto.org>
Who is CTPP Training aimed at?
CTPP Training is chiefly aimed at data users at MPOs and
States. It is appropriate for consultants and students as well.
This training is designed for anyone who is required to work on
long range planning, congestion management, travel forecast,
air quality analysis.
CTPP training sessions are typically one and half days of
hands-on work in a computer based setting. Participants will
engage in discussion, practice analytical skills through exercises,
learn to navigate the CTPP software, and leave with a better
understanding of what transportation data are available and
what are the avoidable pitfalls to using them.
Subjects Covered
Understanding and Dealing with Data Issues
. In-depth, ongoing discussion optimally resulting in better,
smarter data users
Transportation Data and How to Get It
. CTPP, ACS, JTW-What do these acronyms mean? What
agencies collect and produce these data? How accurate,
current, reliable are they?
What Kind of Data Is Collected and Where Is It?
. Commutes, Tours, Modes. Websites, Search engines, Hard
Files-What's out there, how is it found, how is it acquired?
Census and CTPP Geography, Understanding It, Using It
. Custom geography for planning applications
CTPP Data Access Software
. A hands-on, follow-along, in depth, tutorial: Attendees will
create a profile of an area using many features of the CTPP
Data Access Software
Each class is customized for the locality and participants will
receive invaluable access to information and resources that
they will use again and again. The training is interesting,
informative, vital and entertaining.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------
I want to give you advance notice about a few changes to paper submission
and review that will go into effect when the paper submission site opens
tomorrow in preparation for the 2018 Annual Meeting:
* The instructions for Authors, Reviewers, Review Coordinators, and
Event Planners has been reviewed and revised to clean up material that has
accrued over time, eliminate duplication, clarify policy, include volunteer
suggestions, and generally try to tighten up the language and make it more
professional.
* The Compendium of Papers will no longer be produced. As you know,
the Compendium is a subset of the material that is contained in Annual
Meeting On Line. AM On Line includes papers accepted for presentation as
well as powerpoints and poster materials. The Compendium contained only the
papers accepted for presentation but in a static downloadable file. This
duplication of material costs tens of thousands of dollars. The result of
this decision is that Annual Meeting registrants and TRB sponsors will
continue to have access to all the content they have previously had access
to, only not in the particular format of the Compendium.
* The review criterion related to the quality of writing has been
reworded to emphasize that a paper must be written well enough to be readily
understood and that poor English grammar is sufficient grounds for rejection
of the paper. This revision is the result of recommendations from the TRR
Review Advisory Board and concerns expressed by a number of reviewers about
the poor writing quality of many papers. In addition, Neil has been asking
us to be stricter about this issue because poorly written papers require an
inordinate amount of time from editors, which adds to the cost of the TRR
and the time it takes to get papers published.
* Authors who submit papers for presentation will no longer be able to
opt out of including their accepted papers in AM On Line. Approximately 20%
of the authors who submit for presentation do not allow us to include their
accepted paper in Annual Meeting On Line. We have received a number of
complaints from Annual Meeting registrants and from sponsors that they are
not finding papers from Annual Meeting sessions in AM OnLine, papers which
are promised as part of the benefit they receive from registration and/or
sponsorship.
Thanks.

Title:
Choice Modelling Using Emerging Data Sources
Background and Scope:
Choice modellers have traditionally relied on manually collected survey data
which are expensive to obtain and thereby generally have limited sample
sizes and lower update frequencies. Moreover, such data are prone to
reporting errors. On the other hand, over the last decade, passively
collected data sources, which are typically very large and commonly termed
as 'Big Data', have emerged as a very promising source of long, medium and
short-term choices. These range from GPS tracks, mobile phone records,
credit card transactions, social media data, supermarket scanner and loyalty
card data, health records, online browsing information, etc. These passive
data sources not only provide information about the choices made in
different contexts but also about the attributes of the unchosen
alternatives, which is very often not the case in traditional data sources.
Further, they also provide useful insights about the decision makers. For
instance, social media data provide information about the general likes and
dislikes of the user as well details of the characteristics and composition
of his/her online social network.
Data sources like these, which are continuously generating invaluable
information, have already gained widespread interest among the choice
modelling community. However, there are significant challenges associated
with utilising the full potential of these data sources due to the missing
information (socio-demographics of the decision maker and his/her choice set
for instance), privacy issues, potential biases etc. Further methodological
issues often arise due to the sheer volume of the data which challenge the
applicability of the same modelling techniques as used in the traditional
choice modelling data.
The special issue of Journal of Choice Modelling invites paper both on
methodological research on choice modelling using emerging data sources and
its applications in various domains of choice modelling ranging from health,
consumer choice, transport, etc. Potential topics of interest include (but
are not limited to) the following:
. Innovative use of emerging data sources for choice modelling
. Cross comparison of choice models developed using traditional
and emerging data sources
. Methodologies to account for the limitations of the emerging
data sources
. Application and validation issues of choice models estimated
using such data sources
Important Dates:
Submission deadline: 15 Jan 2018
Date for full publication: 15 Dec 2018
