Chuck Purvis' thoughtful calculation of the decline in employed persons
per household (from 1.277 in 1990 to 1.241 in 2000 or rate of -3%)
actually understates an important demographic phenomenon of proportional
decline in the labor force. If we take into account the fact that the
unemployment rate in April 1990 was more than double the unemployment
rate in April 2000, we would see labor force participation per household
declined 7%, from 1.38 to 1.29 LFP/HH.
