Uses of data on the Group Quarters population

The Panel on Measuring the Group Quarters Population in the American Community Survey is considering user needs for ACS data on the various components of the group quarters population and will recommend alternatives to the current sample design, weighting procedures, and other methodological features that can make the ACS group quarters data more useful for small-area data users (users of ACS 5-year period estimates that generally need and analyze data for small governmental jurisdictions, census tracts, and block groups). The panel would like to understand GQ data from the perspective of the data user and has requested information on the specific uses of GQ data and characteristics of the GQ population. We would appreciate you letting us know if your agency has specific uses of GQ data or know of other GQ data uses (whether from ACS or from other data sources). Older decennial & other census data and boundary files

Recently on our State data center Affiliate Listserv, someone asked about 1980/1970 census data and the following link was posted as a possible resource National Historical GIS site (http://www.nhgis.org/). Very accessible for searching and downloading tract data going back to 1970 (and earlier, where it exists). Urban Area webinar

On Friday, June 11, 2010 FHWA and Census Bureau hosted a webinar where the Census Bureau discussed their plans for delineating Urban, Urbanized and Urban Cluster areas. The webinar was recorded and is available at http://fhwa.na3.acrobat.com/p32512114/ along with the slides which can be downloaded from the "materials to take home" pod. In a few weeks the recorded webinar will be moved to its permanent home at the AASHTO CTPP website (http://ctpp.transportation.org/pages/webinars.aspx) along with the slides and a FAQ that is being developed from the questions asked during the webinar. If you have any Urban Area related questions please feel free to post them to this list serve and we will try to answer them for everyone.
