Is anyone going to the ASCE "Applications of Advanced Technology"
conference in Chicago this August? I might be able to get you a
moderatorship which looks like a slight break on the registration fee.
Let me know ASAP if interested.

Attached is the agenda for our LaJolla meeting. While the agenda makes
the meeting look very structured let me assure you that there is plenty
of opportunity to bring up ideas, issues and concerns.
While thinking about midyear meetings, next summer we will be meeting in
Chicago with the TRB planning committees. I do not have the specifics
but it is usually the second week of July.
Also, do not forget that August 1st is the deadline for paper submittals
and that we do have a call-for-papers on the street. I have attached
it. It calls for showcase applications of NHTS/NPTS. Finally, remember
that with the paper submittal deadline comes paper review season.

Can you guys take a look at this and give it some thought. right now
all I keep coming up with are the wrong examples, like the space
shuttle, states that refuse to pass primary seat belt laws and those
without motorcycle helmet laws. In all case the data would suggest an
obvious course of action but...

Subject: Examples of Data Making a Difference - July 10 Meeting

Ed,
Im looking forward to seeing you in La Jolla on Monday, July 10, in
Ballroom B at 6pm, representing Urban Transportation Data and
Information Systems. Nearly 40 group, section, or committee chairs will
be attending the session. Your involvement is critical in moving
forward the Technical Activities Divisions support of the
congressionally mandated Transportation Information Needs Assessment.
At the session we will: (a) update you on whats been done so far, (b)
discuss the process going forward and elicit your reactions to it, and,
(c) most important, get your insights on the importance of data in
transportation decision-making.
In advance of the meeting, we ask that you provide an example or two of
cases in which you believe that data have made a difference in
transportation decisions. Please email your responses to me by Monday,
June 26 so we can use can use it to structure the discussion at our
meeting on July 10th. At the session, we may ask some of you to
summarize your case example for the whole group.
Data can influence transportation decisions in many ways, including the
following list:
* Sharpen discussion
* Define/clarify problem
* Change priorities
* Suggest solutions
* Agenda setting
* Cover for the Decision Makers
* Identify who will be affected
* Avoid surprised, errors
* Basis for public involvement
* Support (private) finance decision
To make it easy for you, please describe your example(s) using the
structure below:
1. Decision (What action):
2. Context (Who, Where, When):
3. Data Sources:
4. Analysis / Presentation Tools:
5. Interpretation: (How did data make a difference):
We understand that you may not have this information at your
fingertips. If so, please discuss this with one or two of your
committee members who you feel have ready access to such examples. If
you dont have an example to contribute to the session discussion, we
are interested in your insights on how data can a difference in
transportation decisions. So, please send us your additions or
refinements to the bulleted list above.
Tom
Here are two articles worth reading for those with an interest in this
stuff. Where Congress has left off on appropriations and the "program"
listing all the SAFETEALU related regulatory actions.
Attached is our agenda for Sunday's meeting to be held in conjunction
with the NATMEC conference. We have only an hour planned for the Urban
Data Committee with our second hour being dedicated to our newest
"joint" subcommittee which goes by the name ADUS. As many of you know
Shawn Turner and Rich Margiotta initiated the ADUS activities for our
committee in what I tended to call a virtual committee. After a few
years ADUS was formalized into a subcommittee under the Traffic
Monitoring Committee. As the subcommittee evolved we joined forces with
Traffic Monitoring and ADUS is formally a joint subcommittee.
Our meeting will be on sunday, June 4th in the Hyatt Regency at Nicollet
Mall in Minneapolis. If you happen to be in town and not attending the
NATMEC conference feel free to drop in.
Our next meeting will be in conjunction with the TRB planning committees
midyear meeting in LaJolla CA the second week of July.

Workshop Planning--One of the annual meeting deadlines is will soon be
upon us. By June 1st Tom P needs to have an indication of any sunday
workshops that we are planning. Last year we were involved with three
workshops. If I were to be asked today I would say that we were not
planning any workshops. With that said if anyone is interested in
pursuing a workshop let me know so that we can develop it and get it on
the list.

This year we were planning on having 2 midyear meetings. One in
conjunction with NATMEC in early June and the other tied to the TRB
planning committees midyear meetings in the middle of July in LaJolla.
Apparently there was a TRB glitch and we did not get on the list for
LaJolla. Now in an attempt to get us space in LaJolla I need a head
count of who think that they will be attending.
If you think that you would be able to attend a midyear meeting in the
middle of July in LaJola please let me know ASAP. this is only a rough
count so do not feel like you commitment is binding. thanks.

Yesterday, Tom Palmerlee sent out an inquiry about the location of the
2007 TRB midyear meeting and our participation. The meeting will be in
Chicago and I indicated that I thought we would participate. For me, it
would be hard to say no to an offer to have the midyear meeting in my
back yard.
This year we will have two opportunities to get together. For those
going to the NATMEC conference (http://www.trb.org/conferences/natmec/)
we will meet there. The conference runs from June 4-7 and we have folks
involved with several sessions and presentations.
We will also have the opportunity to get together at the TRB Joint
Summer meeting in LaJolla California. Those meetings are July 9-11th.
