Yes, it would nice if the standard ACS data products included at least one home-to-work FLOW tabulation, just total worker counts. Very early in the ACS program, when it was just in the testing phase, USDOT met with CB and we asked for both workplace tabulations and flow tabulation. We were successful at getting some workplace tabulations included as standard ACS tabulation, so this is another opportunity to request this concept. Another idea that has been floating around has been to add an estimated "distance to work" variable using a network distance (not crow's fly). The data on the ACS PUMS would need to be perturbed, so that a specific location could not be identified, but for tables, the distances could be grouped, similar to how travel TIMEs are grouped. But, while you are thinking about the Census Bureau, don't forget to submit your comments regarding ACS through their website. A little bird told me that the Census Bureau expected more traffic on this site, and they didn't know if people were waiting until the deadline, or if no one cared. OF COURSE WE (the transportation data community) CARE!
