The question we have in KC is what does this do to areas that were divided into two
urbanized areas in 2000 but had been part of one urbanized area prior to that. The new
small airports and impermeable surface criteria would now allow the two areas to be
rejoined (we think, anyway), and this seemed to be the favored option under the initially
released criteria. Our understanding is that under the revised criteria after public
comment, they would remain separated.

All,
Please note than when population growth and redistribution results in large
"urban agglomerations" of continuously developed territory encompassing
urban areas that were defined as separate urbanized areas (50,00 or more
population) for the Census 2000, the Census Bureau plans on implementing
"split" criteria guided by the location of the Census 2000 boundaries.
These "splitting" criteria are designed to ensure, to the greatest extent
possible, that urbanized areas defined for the Census 2000 continue to be
identified as separate urbanized areas for the 2010 Census, but only if
these urbanized areas continue to qualify as urbanized under the 2010 urban
area delineation criteria.
Also, the final 2010 Census urban area delineation criteria are currently
in review by the legal office of the US Department of Commerce and are
expected to be published in the Federal Register soon (September).

Census Bureau plans on releasing the 2010 TIGER/Line Shapefiles with the
2010 Census urban area boundaries in the Spring of 2012. This date was
chosen to more closely coincide with the publication of the list of urban
area entities, codes, and population counts in the Federal Register.
Please note that the shapefiles to be released at this date are expected to
depict the urban area boundaries only.

I am asking for a clarification and confirmation about the release of the 2010 urban area
boundaries.
I previously participated in a discussion on this list serve that the urban area
boundaries would be released in October of 2012 and that the urban/rural tabulation would
be release in the February of 2012. This was the schedule originally released by the
Census bureau at the beginning of the 2010 census process.
As I understand it now, there has been a change. The urban boundaries will now be release
in Spring of 2012. The urban boundaries will not be released as originally planned in
October of 2012.
This is a significant date for the Lafayette MPO as well as other MPO"s who
anticipate changes in their boundaries.
Might you clarify and confirm?

New subject: Census Bureau 2010 Urban Areas Shapefile Release
Let me try to clarify as there has been a slight change from the Census
Bureau.
First. When are we giong to know what the criteria will be for defining
Urban Areas? We have been waiting for the Census Bureau (CB) to publish
the final criteria in the Federal Register. We have been expecting it
all summer. Yesterday we learned that the draft Federal Register notice
has cleared the CB and we are hoping to see it sometime around September.
Second: Originally the CB was going to release the new Urban Areas in
the Spring of 2012 with the actual Urban/Rural shape files to be
released in Tiger in the Fall of 2012. Yesterday we learned and as
Chris Henry verified both the list of Urban Areas and the Urban/Rural
shape files will be released in the Spring of 2012. Moving up the
release of the shape files from Fall to Spring is the new change and
actually something that is very good.

Hello:
I am asking for a clarification and confirmation about the release of the 2010 urban area
boundaries.
I previously participated in a discussion on this list serve that the urban area
boundaries would be released in October of 2012 and that the urban/rural tabulation would
be release in the February of 2012. This was the schedule originally released by the
Census bureau at the beginning of the 2010 census process.
As I understand it now, there has been a change. The urban boundaries will now be release
in Spring of 2012. The urban boundaries will not be released as originally planned in
October of 2012.
This is a significant date for the Lafayette MPO as well as other MPO"s who
anticipate changes in their boundaries.
Might you clarify and confirm?

As discussed during the last CTPP Oversight Board Quarterly Meeting, the
Census Bureau plans on releasing the 2010 TIGER/Line Shapefiles with the
2010 Census urban area boundaries in the Spring of 2012. This date was
chosen to more closely coincide with the publication of the list of urban
area entities, codes, and population counts in the Federal Register.
Please note that the shapefiles to be released at this date are expected to
depict the urban area boundaries only.
