David:
Good questions.
DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE #2 - #4
The data that will be released MARCH - MAY 2002 are the DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILES #2, #3, and
#4. They will NOT include any place-of-work data. They will only include tables such as
general means of transportation to work by county-of-residence and place-of-residence.
I just printed out the DP #2, #3 and #4 pages this morning, to see what we will be getting
before the general "SF3" data release this summer. The "table shells"
are available on the State Data Centers' web site at:
http://www.sdcbidc.iupui.edu/
see the "other news" section, first bullet, to find links to the demographic
profiles "DP 2, 3, 4 for 2000". To me, the DP #2, #3 and #4 are the "Best
of SF3" tables - - all that's fit to print on three pages, ONLY for PLACES,
COUNTIES, etc., NOT for TRACTS.
SUMMARY FILE #3
In terms of SF3, do NOTexpect any flow data (county-to-county or place-to-place). But SF3
will have tract level data, and it will have certain journey-to-work tables of interest,
say, detailed means of transportation, households by detailed auto ownership level. Again,
ALL SF3 tables are RESIDENCE GEOGRAPHY-BASED.
Again, table outlines for the SF3 are on the SDC web site (above link).
Yes, the TRB-Census web page is (still) accurate in terms of ANY place-of-work or
residence-to-work (flow) data being released in early 2003.
There still, however, may be some "special products" that are released later
this year. What I'm hoping for is a December 2002 data on county-to-county TOTAL
commuters that the Census Bureau is negotiating/working with the US Bureau of Economic
Analysis (BEA).
I'd also *like* a place-to-place TOTAL commuters in January 2003, but beggars
can't be choosers. We will *all* probably have to wait until Spring 2003 for the
place-to-place datasets....
cheers,

Please excuse this
somewhat basic question, but I'm trying to figure out the
release date for journey to work data (residence & workplace based) by place
(i.e. New England towns).
The Census 2000 release schedule says "Sample Demographic Profile"
containing commuting to work data will be released March - May 2002. Will
this contain commuting data by place?
Will it be contained in Summary File 3 (June-September 2002)?
or, as the TRB-Census webpage states, October-December 2002 for residence
based and February-April 2003 for workplace based data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
