Steve:
The overall national sampling rate is 1-in-6 households for the
census long form (and 5-of-6 receiving the short form!) The Bureau
will sample rural (non-metropolitan) households at a 1-in-2 sampling
rate; and a 1-in-8 (12.5%) sampling rate in metropolitan areas. (I'm
fairly certain this is the case, but our Beltway Friends should chime
in if this is wrong....)
The Census Bureau, as of 3/21/00, reports that 7.3 million households
have already returned their census forms. That's about 6.3 percent of
the 115 million forms that the Bureau has mailed/sent out.
The Bureau will begin posting national, state, county and city
response rates on their web site next Monday, March 27th. I don't
have a URL just yet, but here's a link to the story:

And the Census Bureau link that discusses the federal
legislative and program requirements for census data is at:

Has there been a change in the long-form sampling
rate?
I have two residences (an inner-city condo, and a rural house), and
managed to get the long form at BOTH. Fortunately, I'm told I
should only fill out one...
