RE: Summary File #4
Summary File #4 data is now being released, and is available on American FactFinder.
(
http://factfinder.census.gov/)
SF4 data for five states was released today (4/29/03): Delaware, Hawaii, New Jersey,
Vermont and Wisconsin. Data is being released on a flow basis.
The main SF4 news release page is here:
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2003/SF4.html
Full documentation (775 pages in PDF format) for Summary File #4 is available here:
http://www.census.gov/prod/cen2000/doc/sf4.pdf
The Summary File #4 is based on long form, sample data and is provided down to the census
tract level. This product is similar to Summary File #2 (SF #2 is based on short form,
100% data; SF #4 is based on long form, sample data).
Similar to SF #2, the minimum population threshold for SF #4 is 100 persons and 50
unweighted cases. This means that there may be no data reported for very small population
groups at very small (tract) or even moderate size (place, county) geographic levels.
All tables are iterated for total population and 335 race/hispanic/ancestry groups: 132
race categories; 78 American Indian / Alaskan Native groups; 39 Hispanic/Latino groups;
and 86 ancestries (e.g., Irish, Greek, Russian, etc.)
There are 323 total tables in SF #4: 213 "PCT" tables (Population, Census
Tract), and 110 "HCT" tables (Housing, Census Tract).
The commute-related tables in SF #4 are PCT55 through PCT60. The household vehicle tables
in SF #4 are HCT32 through HCT34.
The Summary File #4 can be useful to researchers and planners who are interested in the
socio-economic characteristics of persons in their region or state by
race/hispanic/ancestry.
Some examples of analyses:
1. Group quarters population (institutional, non-institutional) by age group by detailed
race/hispanic/ancestry group (PCT9)
2. Linguistic isolation by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry groups (PCT41)
3. Migration Status (Where Lived in 1995) by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry groups
(PCT49,PCT50)
4. Means of Transportation to Work by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry groups (PCT51)
5. Average Commute Time by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry groups (PCT58)
6. Disability Status by sex by age by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry groups (PCT69)
7. Detailed Industry of Employment by sex by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry groups
(PCT85)
8. Detailed Occupation of Employee by sex by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry group
(PCT86)
9. Household Income Characteristics by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry group
(PCT88-PCT90)
10. Vehicles per Household by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry group (HCT32, HCT34)
11. Households by Tenure by Household Income by detailed race/hispanic/ancestry group
(HCT35)
Good luck to those working with this new data!
