Recently on our State data center Affiliate Listserv, someone asked about 1980/1970 census data and the following link was posted as a possible resource National Historical GIS site (http://www.nhgis.org/). Very accessible for searching and downloading tract data going back to 1970 (and earlier, where it exists).
