Bill:
A list of all 1980 U.S. urbanized areas with their population and land
area is available in the publication by the U.S. Bureau of the Census:
Population and Land Area of Urbanized Areas for the United States and
Puerto Rico: 1980 and 1970." This a Supplementary Report, PC80-S1-14,
issued February 1984. Table 1 gives the population, square miles,
square kilometers, and population density per sq. miles and sq.
kilometers for all urbanized areas, their central cities, and their
urban fringe. The publication also gives outline maps for all 1980
urbanized areas as well as the population of each component area for
1980 and 1970. 475 pages.
As for electronic sources, the computer tape for the 1980 Master Area
Reference file 2 (MARF2), but not MARF1, has the population and square
kilometers for all 1980 urbanized areas (Summary Level 09). The Summary
Level Tape Files for 1980, STF1C, STF2C, and STF3C, all have a list of
urbanized areas and their populations but not, as far as I could
determine, the land area.
I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.
