Thanks for posting the announcement! Our MPO staff have been anticipating this data for
months.
Two questions, perhaps you or Census Bureau Geog Division could answer:
1. Will our new 1 percent and 5 percent PUMAs be on these new TIGER files?
2. Other than the USDOT, what federal agencies use the urbanized area data, and how?

Bureau's TIGER/Line web page this week, but may not be available on Wednesday.

New subject: May 1 ? Fed Reg notice on Urbanized Areas
Chuck..
Only the 5% PUMAs will be in the UA Census 2000 TIGER/Line files. Hopefully
they will be on-line by tomorrow evening. When we come out with the 2002
TIGER/Line files this fall, they should have both (the 1% being a superset
of the 5%).
The file layout for the UA 2000 TIGER/LIne files is at:

We will post the layout for the 2002 TIGER/Line files in a couple of weeks.
There will be major changes in the file layout (added/deleted record types)
to account for the deletion of 1990 geographic codes, and the addition of
current geographic codes.

Similar to Mr. Purvis' question:
For each UA, will there be an index available with the 2000 Census Block "STFID"
codes that make up the UA? STFID is a concatenated field containing FIPS State,
FIPS County, 2000 Tract, and 2000 Block numbers. STFID was present in all Tract, Block
Group, and Block files posted in the Census 2000 section of the Geography
Network. Link to site:

For example:
A 2000 Census block in Maryland has STFID = 240010015021018
24 = County
001 = County
001502 = 2000 Tract Number
1018 = 2000 Block Number
This index would allow a simple match to a county (or region / state) block file to
determine 100% coverage of the UA.

The geographynetwork site is independent of the Census Bureau site, and we
have no information about the structure of their files. This is a question
you will need to ask of ESRI.
You will be able to create a state-county-census tract-block-UA/UC code from
the UA Census 2000 TIGER/Line files by merging RT A and RT S (matching on
CENID-POLYID for the merger) and then unduplicating on the code combination.
(The state-county-tract-block codes are on RT S, and the UA code is on RT A,
with the match key CENID-POLYID on both records.)
