Yes, we are very happy that the Census Bureau has delivered the 3-year
CTPP (2006-2008 ACS) to us. As you all know, the CTPP includes many
tables, I believe over 200. I am too lazy to figure out the exact
count.

I knew that the county-to-county flow table is of high interest, so
Liang Long, who is our CTPP Tech Support staff, prepared this data,
which for your convenience includes CTPP2000 results.
There are over 200,000 county-to-county pairs, so if you want to open
this in Excel, you need to use Microsoft Office 2007, otherwise you will
run over the record limit. You will see the "swiss cheese" nature of
the data, since the 2006-2008 tabulations are subject to the 20,000
population threshold for 3-year ACS data.
AASHTO's data access software vendor, Beyond 2020 and Citygate have now
received the FULL component of data (5 DVDs), and a CTPP subcommittee
will be reviewing an early version of the software that is due on August
4. The vendor was limited in their development because the Census
Bureau gave them blank table shells and they did not have any test data
for the development process, until they received the DVDs a week ago.
Beyond 2020 is expected to finalize the software in September, but since
the CB's data delivery was about 2.5 weeks delayed, we don't get yet
know if the software will also be delayed.
In August, Liang is going to be very busy working on updating the TAZ
responsibility spreadsheets, as we need to deliver the list to the
Census Bureau Geography Division very soon. But, depending on how that
goes, I will see if she has time to make a Place-to-Place flow
tabulation similar to the County-to-County flow tab, but this will
definitely make you crazy with the "swiss cheese" nature of the results.

Hello, everyone -
I'm forwarding this question from a colleague.
For Means of Transportation to Work, the 2006-2008 ACS detailed tables by place break out
bicycles in a separate line. The same question was asked on the ACS from 2003 to 2005 but
there does not seem to be a similar table to download; the 2003-2005 data groups bicycles
with taxi cabs, etc.
Can anyone tell me if data for bicycles only is available for 2003-2005, and if so,
where/how?

Typically the reason when data is not available like Bike broken out for
both data sets and the same geography is that the data was collapsed.
The CB uses a statistical test on the data quality for each mode and
if the mode does not pass it is collapsed with other modes. when
looking at ACS data on factfinder you will find tables starting with a B
or C. The C means its a collapsed table.

statistical collapsing...
"Table Variable Collapsing: As for the 2000 CTPP, the Census Bureau
expects to apply quality control measures on ACS data products for
geographic areas for which categorized tables could be misinterpreted.
Any table whose median distribution of covariance for individual cell
values is greater than 61 percent will be modified or suppressed for
that geography. For example, for a given geography for County X, for a
table with 18 means of transportation, individual covariances are
calculated for estimates of workers who drove alone, carpooled, etc. If
the median of these covariances isgreater than 61 percent, then these
modes would be collapsed to fewer categories according to predefined
collapsed table definitions. If the median of covariances for the
collapsed table still exceeds 61 percent, the table will be suppressed
for County X."

Using ACS for small geographic units is difficult for means of transportation to work with
very small shares, like bike. My recommendation is to use the ACS PUMS data, and
determine the PUMA that best fits the area you are interested in. Each PUMA requires a
minimum of 100,000 population (currently from Census 2000, as the new PUMAs are not yet
defined). BUt, keep in mind that because of the small sample and the small bike shares
that there will be a high margin of error in the results.
Use the Univ of MN IPUMS to create your own tabulations, on line. I wrote an article in a

The CB uses a statistical test on the data quality for each mode and
if the mode does not pass it is collapsed with other modes. when
looking at ACS data on factfinder you will find tables starting with a B
or C. The C means its a collapsed table.

For Means of Transportation to Work, the 2006-2008 ACS detailed tables by place break out
bicycles in a separate line. The same question was asked on the ACS from 2003 to 2005 but
there does not seem to be a similar table to download; the 2003-2005 data groups bicycles
with taxi cabs, etc.
Can anyone tell me if data for bicycles only is available for 2003-2005, and if so,
where/how?
