I'm writing in response to Phil Salopek's comments about 2000 data in
American Factfinder and in the standard data products.
This is something that bears more discussion. I am about to be involved in
a project that reviews all 2000 census products. If anyone reading this is
concerned that there should be some journey to work data in those products,
including perhaps some data that are workplace based, please let me know of
your interest and concerns. Maybe we can do something about it.
I used the 1980 CTPP extensively but did much less with the 1990 files. I
have always wanted to see something like a regular STF3 that was workplace
based; there wouldn't be as much detail but still more demographic and
socio-economic information about workers at their workplaces (TAZs and/or
tracts). I made good use of what we did have in 1980 for economic
development type work, especially in measuring markets for various kinds of
services downtown (in Detroit) where we wanted to look at walking-based
trips and where the tracts were much too large.
I look forward to hearing from you.
