Penelope's note got me wondering so I went and
looked up the 2011
ACS questionnaire and instructions. Surprisingly the questionnaire
did not specify any age restrictions. Just to be on the safe side I
looked at the instructions--you know those instructions that we all
read when we get a survey. On page 6 it said "ANSWER PERSON
QUESTIONS 19 THROUGH 48 IF THIS PERSON IS 15 YEARS OLD OR OVER
(sic)". The work question is 29.
This does raise Penelope's original point about getting a special
tab for those 15 and over.

Actually, it's asked of all persons in the

reported for the universe of workers 16 and older. - you could
ostensibly get a special tabulation of the universe of workers 14 - 18,
if the request passed the Disclosure Review Board.

It's just as bad to not make a plan as to blindly follow the one you
already have.

Unfortunately, at the moment I am stuck using an imperfect wireless
connection which can't handle a big download, i.e., the ACS
questionnaire. But I'm pretty sure the entire LF question set is
only asked of people 16 and older.

My understanding is that the universe for labor
force in the
decennial census and ACS is defined as 16 or above. It used to be
14 or above, perhaps as recently as the 1970 Census. But I think
since 1980 only those 16 and over have even been asked if they
are working or seeking work.
In terms of a more detailed age breakdown - it depends on the
geographic detail you need. The ACS PUMS data would allow you to
obtain labor force status by single years of age, but the
geographic areas are PUMAs, which have minimum of 100,000 people
in them.
You can access the PUMS data via the ipums site at
http://usa.ipums.org/usa/, which is run by the University of
Minnesota. They have an on-line data analysis tool that may help
with the necessary tabulations.

Hi, Cliff
You are right, the ACS only has labor force information for
workers 16 years and older. Even the Longitudinal
Employer-Household Dynamic (LEHD) only contains three age
category (see below), which can't meet your needs neither.
Number of jobs of workers age 29 or younger Number of jobs for
workers age 30 to 54 Number of jobs for workers age 55 or older

I've been asked whether the ACS, or another readily available data
source, provides labor force status for persons 14-18. My
understanding is that ACS does not include this data, that labor
force information is only collected for the population 16 and
older. Am I correct? All suggestions and comments would be
helpful.
Thanks
