Work Hours: Monday – Friday / 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Salary Range: $52,986-$84,778
The City of Durham North Carolina, on behalf of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, (MPO) seeks a Transportation Modeler with extensive experience in the development and maintenance of advanced travel demand and land-use models. Primary responsibilities of this position also include model specifications, estimation, calibration, validation, maintenance, demand forecasting, policy analysis, traffic simulation, scenario testing as well as providing technical support for transportation system performance measures, needs assessments, prioritization for the Transportation Improvement Program and Long Range Transportation Plan. The Transportation Modeler will also be responsible for presentation of scenario outcomes and project prioritization results to the regional technical and policy stakeholders, therefore a high degree of oral and written communication skills, and ability to effectively present technical information to small and large groups is essential. The position will provide a challenging and rewarding experience to the selected candidate.
Requirements, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
· Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred;
· Minimum of five years of progressive and relevant experience in travel demand modeling; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related travel demand modeling experience;
· Hands-on experience and extensive skills with TransCAD and GISDK;
· Experience and skills in computer programming skills (VB, JAVA, C++ or similar), database programming, UrbanSim, GIS and statistics is preferred; and
· Possession of a valid NC class “C” driver’s license.

The Fresno Council of Governments (FCOG) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Fresno County, California. Fresno COG has an immediate opening for a full-time professional level Regional Transportation Planner position specializing in Transportation Demand Modeling. This position is a member of Fresno COG's Travel Demand Modeling, Demographic Forecasting, and GIS Team and performs critical functions supporting the Fresno COG operations.
Fresno COG currently has a traditional four-step travel demand model with transit mode choice and is working on development of an activity based model. Fresno COG utilizes Citilabs Cube/Voyager transportation modeling software, the Envision Tomorrow land use model and is developing a local application for the Integrated Transportation and Health Impact Model (ITHIM).
Responsibilities:
The travel demand modeler will perform a full range of highly technical and advanced professional transportation planning assignments and activities related to travel demand modeling and forecasting. Assignments may include developing and maintaining models to forecast future travel demand, evaluating transportation system performance, providing technical expertise in analyzing travel demand alternatives, and accessing the relationship between transportation, land use and environmental impacts.
The travel demand modeler must be able to work as a collaborative team member, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and handle a high volume of work in a busy and demanding environment. Accuracy and timeliness in completing assignments is extremely important.
Education/Experience:
Graduation from a recognized college or university with a degree in Planning, Math, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, GIS or related field is required. A Master's Degree is desirable.
However, enthusiastic recent college graduates will be highly considered.
The successful candidate will also possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Be highly proficient in all Microsoft Office applications and be extremely detail oriented.
A working knowledge of Citilabs Cube/Voyager and ESRI's ArcGIS is highly desired. Candidates with direct experience applying travel demand models in an MPO setting are preferred.
Candidate should be politically astute but must be apolitical on the job.

The demographer is a key member of the Travel Demand Modeling, Demographic Forecasting, and GIS Team and performs critical functions supporting the Fresno COG model and operations.
This position develops, maintains and disseminates socio-economic, land use information and forecasts for area wide studies and computerized transportation modeling needs. The position is critical in developing and supporting land use information for the Fresno COG transportation models.

This position is responsible for overseeing growth forecast and estimates and managing special studies related to the regions housing, population and employment. The position also assists with the development of the Regional Transportation Plan and other planning studies.
The demographer must be able to work as a collaborative team member, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and handle a high volume of work in a busy and demanding environment. Accuracy and timeliness in completing assignments is extremely important.
Education/Experience:
Graduation from a recognized college or university with a degree in Planning, Math, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, GIS or related field is required. A Master's Degree is desirable.

Applicant must have strong mathematics, computer, spreadsheet, and urban and regional planning knowledge. Applicant should also be highly proficient in all Microsoft Office applications and be extremely detail oriented.
Strong oral and written communications skills are required for preparing and presenting reports, graphics, and presentations. This position provides an exciting opportunity for a technically savvy person to develop critical analysis for the region's decision and policy makers in areas such as transportation, land use, housing, and air quality.
Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge or skills in the following areas: Geographic information system applications (GIS), relational database management and programming (Access, SQL), transportation planning, land use modeling/planning and demographic forecasting.
