Statistics will be available for every county in the U.S. showing the number of workers that commute in or out and which counties those commuters travel to and from. Additional reports and tables, based on statistics from the American Community Survey, examine U.S. residents traveling across county and state lines to work. Specifically, the products present U.S. workers who have commutes of 60 minutes or longer and workers who have "mega commutes" of at least 90 minutes and 50 miles. Statistics will also be available for every county in the U.S. that show the number of workers that commute into or out of the county and which counties those commuters travel to and from. The reports and tables will be posted to the Census Bureau's embargo site at noon EST Monday, March 4. The public release will be at 12:01 a.m. EST Tuesday, March 5. Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news releases and data files to subscribers before the public release date and time. CTPP Training!

CTPP Training Opportunity in the Northeast! Census Transportation Planning Products Program (CTPP) Training is chiefly aimed at data users at the MPO and State. It is appropriate for consultants and students as well. This training is designed for anyone who is required to work on long range planning, congestion management, travel forecast, air quality analysis. Data users whose job requirements include being able to figure out who is going where and when will benefit from this training. CTPP training is one full day, hands on, and computer lab based. Participants will engage in discussion, practice analytical skills through exercises, learn to navigate the NEW CTPP software for five-year CTPP, and leave with a better understanding of what transportation data are available and what are the avoidable pitfalls to using them. CTPP will be doing hands on training in the first two weeks of October in the following locations: Shippensburg, PA (Oct 1) Piscataway, NJ (Oct 10) If you are available and would like to register, please contact me off-list - pweinberger(a)aashto.org and I will tell you how!

Hi, Chuck Thanks for your reminding that ACS 2012 will be the first ACS product that incorporate 2010 Census PUMA. I would also like to add that ACS 2012 is the first full data year to include increased sample size which results estimated 9% reduction in MOEs across estimates. Enjoy! The good news with the ACS 2012 is that the Census-2010-based PUMAs (Public Use Microdata Areas) are a "standard summary level" in American Factfinder. If you're using American Factfinder (AFF), just select the "all geographic types" (instead of "most requested geographic types") in the geographic selection window of AFF. The 3-year (2010-2012) and 5-year (2008-2012) ACS data are scheduled for release over the next several months, with the 5-year PUMS (I'll assume with the newer PUMAs) to be released in January 2014. http://www.census.gov/acs/www/data_documentation/2012_release_schedule/ 10/24/13 -- 3 year ACS data; and the 1-year PUMS 12/5/13 -- 5 year ACS data; and the 3-year PUMS 1/23/14 - 5-year PUMS Lots of new interesting data to plumb. Short summary of key points from Jim Treat's presentation at APDU (Association of Public Data Users)

You might like to look at the session on Social Media, but the topic of the greatest interest to the CTPP community is about ACS. Jim Treat from the Census Bureau discussed ACS activities: 1. ACS Data Users Group has been established. (Note: Ed Christopher from FHWA is our transportation data representative to this group.) 2. Data release schedule: a. 1 year 2012 ACS: Sept 19, 2013 b. 3 year 2010-2012 ACS: October 24. c. 5 year 2008-2012 ACS: December 5. d. New product will be 3-year comparison profiles of non-overlapping years: 2007-2009 with 2010-2012. 3. Census API -over 3500 developer keys have been distributed. Census developers forum has over 900 members. 4. ACS Content review. a. The Census Bureau has identified 18 criteria on which to determine whether questions should be kept or discarded. i. 12 of the measures are on utility and quality ii. 6 of the measures are on difficulty. b. Federal agencies will be asked to submit "clear documentation" to justify "their" questions this fall. (Note: this type of request seems to be happening with more frequency. USDOT submitted a big package of justification to OMB for the journey to work questions in ACS in September 2012). c. Beginning in January 2014, there will be an on-line survey of non-federal data users on ACS Content. On Sept 25, APDU will be conducting a webinar on Statistical Disclosure Control. Hi Everyone - I know that some of you are interested in the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX), especially as it includes information on vehicle ownership, maintenance costs. The geographic level is large, as the sample is small. In the CEX microdata, the (residence) geography includes: region, state, CMSA, urban/rural status, and population size of the area. Vehicle data include: make, model year, purchase date and price Costs includes: fuel, purchase costs, lease costs, auto rentals, insurance, state registrations, prop taxes on vehicles, and other costs (e.g cost of repairs, tolls, veh inspection cots). The unit of measurement in the CEX is a "consumer unit" which is interchangeably called a "household." It is an individual or group of individuals who live together and make joint expenditure decisions. Survey to Inform Research and Tools on Uncertainty in ACS Data

Hi CTPPers, Brian McKenzie from the Census Bureau suggested that I contact this list-serv to ask if you would help us with some research we are doing. Several colleagues and I from Colorado University at Boulder and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville are working on building tools and experimenting with visualization to deal with uncertainty in the ACS. Our team is conducting a survey to help guide our work. The survey is designed primarily for planners, but they we also interested in the opinions of other practitioners, policymakers, and researchers who work with ACS data.
