Thank you to everyone who attended yesterday's webinar. We covered a
LOT of material, so you may want to review some of it again! Thank you
especially to Michelle Jiles from the Census Bureau for conducting the
training.
Please note that in addition to LISTENING and WATCHING these archived
sessions, there are MANY useful files in the "download" boxes. You can
access these boxes through the recording and download the files to your
computer.
For example, Michelle Jiles' ppts with notes are available, and may help
you walk through a Data Ferrett or AFF2 session.
Also, "cheat sheets" for AFF2 and Data Ferrett are included - these are
very brief handouts that point you to key words and boxes on the
screens.
>From one of the initial polls on Dec 19, only one-third had attended the
Oct 11 session. If you are a NEW AFF2 user, I highly recommend that you
view the October 11 session FIRST.

TIGERweb - TIGERweb is a web-based map viewer allowing users to view
and query boundaries and features that are stored in our MAF/TIGER
geographic database. It currently shows the 2010 Census geographic
boundaries and features. In addition to the geographic attributes it
contains the 2010 Census population and housing unit counts for the
selected geographic unit. TIGERweb can be accessed at

about the TIGERweb viewer and WMS.
KML File Prototypes - 2010 Census counties and census tract KML files
are now available. These are prototype KML files released to gather
input from our customers about future KML files. We are soliciting
feedback on the type of layers and attributes that should be released in
future KML products. We hope to add KML files to our suite of mapping
related files in 2012. Feedback sent to geo.tiger(a)census.gov by
February 28, 2012 will be used to create the requirements for future KML
products. See http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/kml/kml.html

Subject: Persons per household by Housing Type in American Community Survey

From: Carl Miller <CMiller(a)compassidaho.org>
I’m trying to figure out how to calculate PPH by Housing Type using the
ACS. We use this data for making our TAZ level population estimates. I
understand the Census Bureau provided this information with the 2000
census, but I don’t see it in either the 2010 census data or any of the
ACS data. Any suggestions.

Thought I'd pass this along to the group as you can pull old Census data from here. It looks like you need to pull it into your own program, such as ArcGIS, SAS, Access or Excel.
It could come in handy after the legacy Factfinder is taken offline.

We all knew this was coming but I for one have been in denial. I think
the Bureau is underestimating how the change will affect me.

I just wanted to share a tiny nugget of wisdom I just learned on AFF2:
Have you ever wondered how/why it is that you sometimes get grayed-out
'search results' boxes? At least one reason is that you have selected a
geography for which data is not available. If you have selected multiple
geographies, and only one of them is a 'data not available' geography, AFF2
will still give you a grayed-out search result box, and you have to start
over. There is no prompt telling you when data is not available for a
geographic selection, so far as I can tell.
I hope this helps other users. I tried sending an e-mail to AFF2 through the
'feedback' prompt but first it told me my message was too long, then when I
reduced it to within the it just refused to take my feedback anyway.
Evidently they don't really want feedback. Given the abysmal quality of
their product, I can see why.

Hi again,
I've been working with the CTPP Place-level data lately and i noticed that the Place codes in the 2006-2008 data have changed from the 1990 and 2000 data. Has anyone dealt with this? Any ideas on how to reconcile them?
Thanks,
nick
I like to have a paper copy of the table list at my desk, rather than to
try to use the keyword search on AFF2, or to find the ACS documentation
somewhere on the Census Bureau website. Several people helped put this
abbreviated list together. Thank you to Nathan Erlbaum for recommending
that it be shared with the listserv.
Remember that B08xxxxx and C08xxxxx are the "journey to work" tables,
but also include household tables such as:
Household size by Vehicles available;
Household size by Number of Workers in Household; and
Number of Workers in Household by Vehicles Available.
And don't forget to sign up for our Dec 19 webinar on Data Ferrett and
more tricks with AFF2.

For this link to work, you need the address to include all the way to
"=23950". Sometimes the listserv software breaks up the link and
doesn't have the entire address strung together.

Today i got this question from an MPO friend of mine and was hoping others
on the list could help me. Anyone experiencing similar issues.

We have experienced the frustration of block boundaries between the 2000
Census and the 2010 Census being dramatically different within our
urbanized area. Our GIS experts have had a difficult time assembling and
reconciling the differences in order for us to simply compare data on a
block-by block basis. Do you know if this is unique to us or are we in
the same boat as others?
