2009 TIGER/Line Shapefiles released today; info on 2010,TIGER/LineShapefiles

FYI--Besides the 2009 Tiger Files it looks like we will have the new 2010 Files before the 2010 Block population counts come out in around March of 2011. This is good news. Just yesterday I was in a meeting where the question came up. ================== The Census Bureau has released 2009 TIGER/Line Shapefiles today. Available here: http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/ This will be the last public release of TIGER data until early 2011. This early 2011 release will include all of the updated 2010 tabulation geography that serves as the geographic framework for 2010 Census data tabulations (including the new 2010 Census tracts, block groups, blocks, voting districts, and much more). Around the same time as this 2011 geospatial data release, Census will be releasing the tabular data with 2010 Census population counts down to the Census block level. mode to work by small workplace geographies

Does anyone know when the census will release mode of transportation to work by smaller workplace geographies than place? I was disappointed that the 2005-2009 ACS didn't have it. Coming up with a work trip mode split for downtown is something people ask us about all the time. You can use American Factfinder as a portal. There will also be a clickable link next to the familiar portion of AFF in which you select the desired ACS year(s) for which you would like data. Hope this helps. ACS 5-year Summary File retrieval tool

Hi Everyone-- Brian McKenzie at the Census Bureau provided this information on viewing files in Excel to help those of you when you download the tract or block group data from the "summary file" format, instead of the AFF. Please be sure to share your experiences with analyzing the new 2005-2009 ACS data with the CTPP listserv. Thanks in advance. You just download the excel file with the macro built into it onto your hard drive, and you can view any SF table in Excel format rather than having to deal with ASCII files.

Mapping America using ACS2005-2009 from NY Times

I was reading the NY Times on my way to work today and found out there are a serious of articles about ACS2005-2009. The most amazing thing is that they developed this interactive map at the Census Tract level for the whole nation. The maps show household income, home value, education and race and ethnicity at each tract and also the percentage change from the Census 2000. Here is the link. In my opinion, the bureau has absolutely made the right decision in keeping the block group data off of AFF. I recommended this course of action several years ago. The error levels are WAY too high for casual users, and power users can easily download the file and do what they need to do. TAZ delineation software: update on process

To State DOTs and MPOs who will be delineating TAZs and TADs for the CTPP: Many of you have been sending corrections to the TAZ contact databases over the last couple of weeks. Thanks so much for your attention to this matter. If you haven't done so already, please convey your changes/updates to Ms Liang Long, liang.long(a)dot.gov The Census Bureau Geography Division has told us that they are likely to use a data download system to transmit the TAZ delineation software and the county files to you. This system will be password protected. There will still be some agencies for which this approach may not be feasible, and in those cases, a mailout will be used instead. Don't forget the workshop on ACS data at TRB annual meeting, on Sunday, January 23 at the Hilton, Columbia Hall 6 from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Hope to see you there. ACS 2005-09 comparisons with 2000 SF3

Nathan Erlbaum of NY State DOT has provided some links that may help you when the first small area data are released from the ACS (2005-2009). Note: the smallest geographic unit will be census tract (2000 geography). Block Group data will be released later in Summary File format. This may help next week when the 5-year ACS data are released. It appears that the Census Bureau has updated its guidelines for comparing the 5-year 2005-09 ACS data to 2000 data. When I checked this link today (http://www.census.gov/acs/www/guidance_for_data_users/comparing_2009/), I noticed that it included the 5-year data, which had been missing when I last checked just a week or so ago. Also, the Bureau provides a variable-specific drill-down tool here: http://www.census.gov/acs/www/guidance_for_data_users/2009_table_comparison… Pretty neat.

Developing Transportation Data Products from the American Community Survey That Comply With Disclosure Rules -- Call for Second Phase Research Test Sites

Dear Colleagues (apologies for cross-posting for those who also subscribe to TMIP-L), The study team for NCHRP 8-79 (Developing Transportation Data Products from the American Community Survey That Comply With Disclosure Rules) is looking for small and medium-sized MPOs to participate in the second phase of research into the impact of disclosure-avoidance techniques on the resulting data usability for transportation planning and travel demand modeling of the 5-year ACS-based CTPP tabulations. The team is interested both in small and medium-sized MPOs who maintain their own travel demand forecasting models, and MPOs who perform sketch-planning modeling using the methods from NCHRP Report 365. Participation would include production of a nominal amount of travel model output. 5-year ACS is coming December 14th

The reference webinar is for the media but when I went to the web page it appeared that anyone could join. ---------------------------- American Community Survey 2005-2009 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates -- On Dec. 14, at 9a.m. EST, the Census Bureau will hold a Web conference to present data covering more than 40 topics, such as income, poverty, educational attainment, commute to work, foreign-born population, language spoken at home, ancestry, occupation, number of vehicles available and housing costs. These estimates will be available for the nation, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional districts, counties, places and metropolitan areas and census tracts and block groups.
