Periodically, the question comes up asking if there will be another CTPP
like product under the American Community Survey (ACS). I don't think
anyone at this time can honestly answer that question which is one of
the reasons for bringing the transportation community together in May
'05 for our "Census Data for Transportation Planning: Preparing for the
Future" Conference in Irvine, California.

In terms of future special census data tabulations like the CTPP,
someone just passed me this link which delineates the Census Bureau's
Disclosure Review Board Rules/Requirements for special tabulations. If
you have been doing extensive work with your current CTPP data some of
these future rules may send shivers up your back.

If you are going to TRB and want to hear more on this topic make sure to
put Session 502, "American Community Survey: Challenges and More
Challenges", Tuesday, January 11, 2005, 1:30 PM - 3:15 PM, on your
list. http://trb.org/am/ip/assembly_detail.asp?id=2988

News in this Alert

ACS receives $146 million in FY 2005 funding; full implementation to begin in January 2005.
The U.S. Census Bureau today announced it has received $146 million for ACS for FY 2005. The funding, approved by the U.S. Congress as part of a massive omnibus bill, allows the Census Bureau to conduct a short form-only census in 2010 and provide the nation with annual socio-economic information every year, rather than just once a decade. The President signed the bill December 8.
The ACS will be mailed to a sample of households in all 3,233 U.S. counties and in Puerto Rico each month, beginning in late December.
The $146 million is $19 million less than the Presidentâ**s request, which means implementation of the ACS in group quarters (e.g. college dormitories and prisons) will be delayed until 2006.

I am wondering what is meant by the PAUG (augmented person flag) and DDP (data-defined person flag) in the person file for 2000 PUMS. The brief definitions in the data dictionary don't make it clear to me.
Thanks for your help.

Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics Program News
The Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) program is an
innovative system that combines administrative data on employers and
employees with core demographic data to produce new local statistics on
workers and their industries.
The flagship product - Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) - is possible
because of a partnership with 35 states, through their labor market
information agencies. The QWI include measures of employment, turnover,
job creation and loss, and earnings by industry and by age and sex of
worker. Available at the local level - for counties, places, workforce
investment areas, etc. - this data set makes it possible for workers and
workforce boards to better understand where the jobs are and what training
is needed and for businesses and economic development agencies to assess
workforce availability and pay.
Advanced confidentiality protection techniques ensure that the
confidentiality of the people and firms that provide the data is protected.
Redesigned Web Site
The Census Bureau launched a redesigned web site this week to provide users
with an easy-to-navigate site. It is available at
http://lehd.dsd.census.gov.
The redesigned web site adds a number of new applications and features,
introduces consistency in navigation and look and feel, builds a structure
for adding content and integration with the Local Employment Dynamics
program's state partners' web sites, and seeks to improve responsiveness to
the users.
For example, two new applications - Local Workforce and Top Industries -
have been added to provide the latest information on the composition of the
local workforce and the "hot" industries in terms of hiring and earnings.
The popular QWI Online continues to provide 8 quarterly workforce
indicators by geography, industry, and demographics. The new site also
offers a glimpse of the pilot project, On The Map, where the origin and
destination patterns of workers between home and workplace are mapped.
Featured sections such as "Quick Links", "What's New?", "Q&A", "Did You
Know?", and "Partners Only" are included in the new web package, along with
a chance to provide "Feedback" and perform a Google "Search" within the web
site.
The web site will be continuously upgraded in the next 6-9 months. The next
major milestone is the introduction of the mapping application between June
and September 2005. Visit http://lehd.dsd.census.gov for more information
about the LEHD/LED program.
The Listserve
This listserve is for those like you who have expressed an interest in the
LEHD program. Through it, we will keep you updated on the latest LEHD
research and products. If you know of others who might be interested, they
can join by going to the website at

Posters are sought for a May 11-12, 2005 Transportation Research Board
(TRB) conference in Irvine, CA on applications of Census 2000, CTPP2000,
and the American Community Survey (ACS) data. The posters will be part
of a conference, Census Data for Transportation Planning: Preparing for
the Future which will (a) assessing transportation use of the decennial
census and (b) review the potential for ACS as a replacement for the
decennial census long form for the transportation planning community
needs.
In preparing posters, authors should explicitly address the following
questions:
o What census data was used
o How the data was used
o What value was achieved
o What problems or issues were encountered with the data
Proposals are due Jan. 21, 2005. See the Call at
http://www.trb.org/conferences/censusdata/

Here is the link to the Census Bureau's web on Poverty for 1999 (as Census 2000 asks for income in 1999). As you know, CTPP 2000 is a special tabulation of the Census 2000 long form data.
