I just received a email that the Census Bureau has begun a listserv regarding ACS issues. As you are aware, the CB plans to have ACS replace the decennial Census "long form." Here is the link to the CB page to "subscribe" to the list. lists.census.gov/mailman/listinfo/acs-alert The first message from the "ACS alert" failed to include the information about the Federal Register notice of Jan 16, with responses due on March 20, regarding plans for full implementation of the ACS beginning in 2003. wais.access.gpo.gov docid: fr16ja02-38 Here is the text of the message I received from the CB: WELCOME TO THE AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY ALERT. This is the first in a series of periodic e-mail messages to inform you about news, events, data releases, Congressional actions, and other developments associated with the American Community Survey. The American Community Survey is the U.S. Census Bureau's new approach for collecting accurate and timely socioeconomic and housing information about our nation and its states, cities, and communities. As part of the Census Bureau's plan to re-engineer the decennial census, the American Community Survey will replace the long form in 2010. It will begin full implementation nationwide in 2003, pending Congressional funding. I agree with Peter and others who have written to support the CTPP list service. I believe the cross pollination of ideas has been healthy. As matter of fact, when I don't have time to read the emails at the office, I print them and read at home! There is a very easy to use delete button on the e-mail software that allows one to remove e-mails that are not of interest. Technology benefits us

The reason we use this list serve is to promote efficient communication and exchange of ideas. List services are based on the premise of people having the option to reply or using the information they find. If you don't like it delete it, but don't stop using the service for your input may be crucial to some future issue. By removing yourself from the group you diminish the over knowledge base and the effectiveness of this service. Thanks Chad Ives

Thanks for the idea exchanges

I want to thank the group who spontaneously without hesitation, participated the discussion to expressively sent their response on the census idea and concept they thought would provide information helpful to others. I'm not in any way oppose to this free expression of ideas and concept. I don't want it, be stop or changes. Thanks a lot to those who unselfishly join the fray. I'm with John and Carlos on this. Personally, I've gotten a lot of good information from the emails. If the conversations go "private," we lose a purpose of the listserve, and lose a sense of community. I think the fact that there are disagreements and issues is important information in itself...maybe another strategy would be to take a deep breath, count to ten, and keep on talking.
