Minor updates to the urban data committee web page at:
http://www.mtc.ca.gov/trb/urban/
1. Includes meeting notes from the May 12, 2002 midyear meeting of the Urban Data Committee in Orlando Florida. This is on the "Current and Future Committee Activities" page at:
http://www.mtc.ca.gov/trb/urban/a1d0806.htm
2. Recently held conferences (Cincinnati conference on Small and Medium Sized Communities) have been moved to the "old conference" web page:
http://www.mtc.ca.gov/trb/urban/a1d0807.htm Upcoming Conferences

That's about all for now!

someone please confirm that in fact we don't have a 14-hour ADUS data mining
session on Tuesday evening from 3:45 pm until 5:30 am - now that is a cure
for insomnia . . . ;-)

Well, I think most everything is set for the TRB annual meeting. At
least there is some breathing room. Overall we had 23 papers (i think
that was the last number) to review, 13 of which were accepted--most
for publication. I'll pull all the statistics together shortly.
Below is a listing of the sessions we have had a hand in with more
detailed information on each one attached. Generally, we have three
presentation sessions (mixed and matched with other committees), two
paper sessions, one poster and one workshop. In addition, two other
papers were given over to the Statewide Data Committee (A1D09) after our
review to round out another session and another paper that was
submitted will be presented at the A1D08 committee meeting. I
understand that the TRB draft program will be out sometime soon and then
we will know more.
As you can see, from just the urban data perspective we have quite a bit
going on.
Thanks to everyone who has helped.

remember this workshop? it was held at the end of august 2002. or even
the INFOstructure we heard about at last year's annual meeting. after
going through the information on the website below i feel like i was
there.
================
What? Why? How?.
As promised, we have posted the White Papers, the various presentations,
and the Break-out Reports to the following website.

Sincerely,
The Roadway INFOstructure Planning Committee
Transportation Research Board
This Workshop was sponsored by the TRB Intelligent Transportation
Systems
Committee (A5009), ITS America, and the California Department of
Transportation.
we have a paper that i need to get at least one more review on.
unfortunately, i can't find anyone to review it. below is the abstract.
the paper was passed to us by another committee and in my opinion
should be lodged somewhere between whatever committee knows how loop
detectors work and the statistics committee--like the expressway
surveillance folks. but anyway we got it. if anyone want to take a
crack at it let me ASAP.
====================
An Improved Travel-time Estimation Algorithm using Dual Loop Detectors
This paper presents an algorithm for the off-line estimation of
route-level travel times for uninterrupted traffic flow facilities, such
as motorway corridors, based on time-series of traffic speed
observations on the sections that constitute a route. The proposed
method is an extension of an existing and widely used method known as
the trajectory method. The novelty of the new method is the fact that
trajectories are constructed based on the assumption of piecewise linear
(and continuous at section boundaries) vehicle speeds rather than
piecewise constant (and discontinuous at section boundaries) speeds.
Based on these assumptions, mathematical expressions are derived that
describe the trajectories within each section. These expressions can be
used to replace their existing counterparts in the traditional
trajectory methods. A comparison of the accuracy of the new method and
the existing method has been carried out based on simulated data. This
comparison shows that the RMSE value for the new method is about half
the RMSE value for the existing method. After decomposing this RMSE
error in a bias and a residual error, it turns out that the existing
method significantly overestimates the travel time. However the largest
part of the reduction of the RMSE value is still due to a reduction of
the residual error. In other words: if both methods are corrected for
their bias the new method performs significantly better.

It is with deep sorrow that I inform you of the untimely death of Dr.
Charles (Chip) Alexander, Jr. Chip drowned at Virginia Beach while
swimming with his daughter over the Labor Day weekend. Chip was an
Assistant Division Chief in the Demographic Statistical Methods Division
since 1993. Chip is best known for his leadership in pioneering the
development of the American Community Survey.
Chip is survived by his wife, Diane (DSD), his daughter, Emily and his
son,
David. This is a terrible shock and a tremendous loss to the Census
Bureau. We will miss Dr. Alexander's keen intelligence, his gentle
spirit,
and above all, his fine character.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but we will keep you
informed.

Go@ Da%&*#.
I had the same problem myself and it turned out my email addy was not right. it said "con" instead of "com". i suppose i can check all the email addresses very carefully. i still have a few more reviews to get out
so it may be a day or two. this could be a real issue for reviews i am sending to folks outside the committee.
thanks for the heads up
