Conducted since 1969, this national program provides detailed data on the characteristics of travelers, trips, and vehicles. Information provided by the NHTS helps to answer both very basic and highly complex questions about system use, access, mobility, performance, and safety. The data collection effort for the 2008 NHTS was completed in May 2009 with participation from over 155,000 households. Results, including detailed characteristics for persons in U.S. households and their vehicles, will be reported in late fall 2009.
