ABJ30 Members and Friends,
Ed Christopher forwarded this information to me with the following statement:
"This came across the census news today. This could be the start of something big." --- and I agree!! I would like to include a short discussion of this emerging opportunity at the Annual Meeting - stay tuned for more apps in our future!
Web Transformation
Census Application Programming Interface (API) - The Census Bureau is releasing its first ever API. This online service provides the building blocks for developers to design online and mobile apps, such as interactive maps, charts and databases, using a variety of Census Bureau statistics. The API provides statistics down to the neighborhood level (tracts and block groups) from the 2010 Census Summary File 1 and the
2006-2010 American Community Survey. With these two datasets available in the form of an API, database editors and other developers have easier access to a wide variety of timely, localized information, including population totals, age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, home ownership, education, income, employment, commuting and occupation. The API is currently undergoing beta testing and is scheduled for public release in July. More information about the API can be found at <http://www.census.gov/developers/>.
Regards,
Kate

Co-Sponsoring Committee(s): ABJ60 Geographic Information Science and Applications
ABJ95 Visualization in Transportation
Organized by: Computational Transportation and Society joint subcommittee ABJ30(2)
Call Description: The convergence of pervasive sensing with location-aware and social media technologies, along with infrastructure-based sensors, will lead to massive amounts of innovative "Big Data" in transportation. These data can be structured or unstructured, ranging from GPS trajectories to text, video, still images and so on. The workshop will focus on data management, information extraction, data mining, mobility mining, analysis of User-Generated Content, multi-sensor fusion and mobility information services that can be built using such data. The committee is also interested in data quality issues relating to User-Generated Content and computational and policy research related to privacy and information security.
The Computational Transportation and Society joint subcommittee, ABJ30(2), is especially interested in presentations and demonstrations that fit into one of the three areas: i) pedagogic reviews of the state-of-the art/practice in big data informatics for mobility decision-making; ii) examples of proposed or ongoing projects, or; iii) visionary statements of challenges or opportunities.
We welcome participation across a broad spectrum of scientists and practitioners interested in big data and mobility decisions, including (but not limited to) academia, public sector, private sector, and local transportation and planning agencies and organizations, and software developers

ABJ30 Members and Friends,
Good news about some job opportunities below - please share with folks you think would be interested - thanks!
There is a need for several individuals to help in the analysis of transportation policy at FHWA. It's a fun job, the people are great, and we have lots to work on! An advertisement should be in the USA JOBS today for relatively senior individuals at the 12/13 level who have experience in research and who are capable of preparing work plans, presentations, reports, and performing data analysis. Very soon another ad should be published for an entry level person with a similar skill set but perhaps little experience. The jobs are being fast -tracked and the first is currently closing on June 29,2012. We have asked for a 5 day extension.

92ND TRB Annual Meeting

Emerging Data Collection Methods and Travel Demand Models
Sponsoring Committee: ADB40 - Transportation Demand Forecasting
Call Description: Emerging data collection methods such as GPS, location aware technologies, transit smart cards, mobile phones and hand-held computers, sensor networks, web-based records, and conventional household travel surveys have expanded both the quality and quantity of information available to model travel demand. As these data collection methods increasingly complement or even replace traditional vehicle and person-based surveys such as travel diaries, their application to travel demand models seems to be key to validating the characteristics of the data collected as well as the complexity of the models developed (mode choice, route choice, activity type choice, travel time, etc.). At the same time, data from sensors measuring air quality, noise, and energy consumption has expanded the scope of travel demand models to include integrated modeling of transportation and energy consumption and better representation of the impacts associated with travel.
This year the Emerging Methods Sub-Committee is interested in and would welcome submissions on new methods of data collection for travel demand or the development of travel demand models using these emerging methods. New methods include but are not limited to:
* GPS and location aware technologies
* Transit passive data or smart cards
* Smart phones and hand-held computers
* Sensor networks (wired or wireless)
* Web-based mass data
* Integration of multiple data sources, including new technologies and conventional surveys
Studies that have developed travel demand models using such data sources, or are in the process of doing so and can report on technologies, challenges, data issues, planned model development, etc., are welcome to submit papers in response to this call.
Authors who have submitted papers in response to this call are requested to send AN E-MAIL WITH THE PAPER NUMBER, TITLE, AND ABSTRACT to MAYA ABOU-ZEID (ma202(a)aub.edu.lb) by August 3rd, 2013.
