There are many causes of distraction. Probably the biggest and most dangerous is a mother driving with small children in the back seat, who keeps turning around to check on them, scold them, etc. Other distractions include changing CDs, tuning the radio, drinking coffee, and smoking. Many of us have seen women putting on makeup, and people reading the newspaper during the morning commute. Cellphones are being demonized and are an easy target.

Wow, I heard this years ago and then it seemed to go away. This is a huge challenge with all of the new cars having hands-free technology.
Every once in a while on twitter I say that you can be as distracted as you want when you ride transit. Of course, that assumes transit exists and is good.

California's had a hands-free requirement for adult drivers and an all-out ban since July 1, 2008, and we are seeing a reduction. SafeTREC is still examining the data, but preliminary results support a slight, but significant, reduction.
