Since I have gotten some individual messages, I am going to post a response to the entire group:

This was a PROTOTYPE only, and I think it is useful to review this website if you are working on developing a similar system.

I don’t think that these are the best “metrics”  (aggregate trips, aggregate VMT) because I prefer PER PERSON and PER HOUSEHOLD measures.  But, I am sure that other people prefer aggregates for their State, rather than per capita or per household.  If you are in “dashboard”, if you click on a state in the thematic map, it gives annual person trips (and of course, I would prefer Weekday Daily, and Weekend Daily).

One of the things I really liked was the “pie-bubbles” because you can see (if you pay attention), for example, that while “personal/family business” trips are MORE vehicle trips than “work” trips, that the VMT for “work trips” exceed VMT for “personal/family business”  for the States that I selected.  The pies are presented in sorted order (high to low) with the size of the bubble (circle) relative to each other.   (Note to ORNL—maybe the trip purpose labels should be different colors, so that people recognize that the bubbles are in different sort order when they click on trips, or vmt?)

In the  DET  table extractors, I like the idea of  just by clicking on the drop down variable elements that you can get the results.

I like the “old” NHTS table generator and find it easy to use, but I think there are likely some very common elements to make data querying even more simple, so this is a start along those lines.

This morning, I attended a meeting of NYMTC and NJTPA, and they are currently developing an interactive tool for looking at their recent household travel  survey data (the data are not yet finalized).  I will be excited to find out what  GeoStats comes up with.

Subject: [CTPP] Sharing prototype of travel survey data visualization tools developed by ORNL

http://nhts.ornl.gov/det/      Data Visualization Prototypes from Oak Ridge National Labs, for Federal Highway Administration

I don’t know how long these tools have been available on the NHTS website, but I found them a couple of weeks ago.  I thought I would share the link because these ideas might be useful for :

1.        People who are working on the Commuting in America project

2.       People who have their own regional or statewide household survey and plan for interactive web-based data access tools

If you have questions about NHTS:  a contact list is available here: http://nhts.ornl.gov/contactUs.shtml

If you have questions about the data visualization prototype, please contact Dr. Ho-Ling Hwang at hwanghl@ornl.gov
