Iowa DOT Travel Demand Modeling Coordinator
The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), Office of Systems Planning is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Travel Demand Modeling Coordinator/Transportation Planner to work on the Modeling, Forecasting and Telemetrics team. Successful candidates
will have a high degree of interest and experience in all aspects of travel demand modeling. Candidates will also have a considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of urban and regional transportation planning.
This position is responsible for coordinating, developing and applying travel demand models in cooperation with Iowa’s nine Metropolitan Planning Organizations to support long-range transportation planning and project development.
Work will entail extensive hands-on application of travel models and interpretation of model results for decision making. This position will play a critical role in strengthening and improving Iowa’s urban traffic modeling efforts by implementing the Iowa
Standardized Model Structure (ISMS) in the MPO travel demand models using TransCAD, ArcGIS, GIS-DK programming language and Structured Query Language (SQL) database tools. This position will provide ongoing training and support to MPO travel model staff.
This position will provide technical training, development, maintenance and application of the Iowa Travel Analysis Model (iTRAM), the DOT’s statewide
travel demand model. This position will work closely with the team’s Traffic Forecasting Coordinator for successful use of the iTRAM to support rural traffic forecasting, project analysis and corridor studies. This position will play a critical role
to support an update to the iTRAM.
Position responsibilities include providing support and assistance to staff in performing long-range planning activities for highways including capacity analyses, roadway condition analyses, vehicles miles traveled, secondary road fund distribution factors,
performing system mileage checks in the department’s
Geographic Information Management System (GIMS) and Roadway Asset Management System (RAMS), Road Use Tax Fund analysis, and other system reporting measures using SQL.
This position will work with large data sets such as Census Data, household travel survey, Global Positioning System (GPS) and location-based origin/destination, traffic count database TRAffic DAta System
(TRADAS) and in-house GIMS and RAMS data.
This position is responsible for learning and providing technical training
and support to DOT team members for mesoscopic and microscopic simulation modeling using
TransModeler.
Other responsibilities include duties as assigned, representing the department and making presentations to MPO and RPA technical committees and policy boards, Midwest Travel Model User Group, and conferences.
This position will require excellent written and oral communications skills.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited four-year college with a planning or closely related degree is a plus. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
Overnight travel not regularly required.
Salary: Minimum $55,140.80 – Maximum $85,404.80
