Something is going on here...

I can not figure it out either. First I wonder what flows are being used. The 2009 to 2013 released by the Census Bureau are only at the county to county level although the website for the visualization suggests it is track to track data http://ilikebigbytes.com/index.php/2016/05/18/acs-commuter-data-visualizations/.   I did some checking on the CB website and there are no track to track flows there ( http://www.census.gov/hhes/commutin/data/commutingflows.html) that I could find. Maybe they are somewhere else, let me know.  I do know that the CTPP produces track to track flows but I think we can say with confidence that is not the source.

Also, doing what several others did, I did my own analysis for Cook County Illinois. Using the 2009 to 2013 ACS flow data I came up with 2,364,075 resident workers for Cook County. Setting the visualization tool to show trips between zero and 300 miles (its minimum and maximum possible) I got 977,059 resident workers. So according to my calculator 1,387,016 workers live in Cook Country Illinois and travel more that 300 miles to go to work daily. Once I find the location of these workers I will be looking for investors to help me privately build a high speed rail line ;-)

In a separate email I invited the creator of the visualization product to join this listsever and sent him the link to its archive. While many of us are data people and want to understand what the data represents before advising decision-makers or drawing conclusions, I applaud this product.  I think this is only one small example of what can be done with the data and hope that he will join the discussion.  We need more products like this and there is whole community of "data people" out there who can help with data side.

I would be cautious, just did a quick check, it says ACS, but unsourced as to what ACS (I’m guessing 2009 – 2013 county to county flows – otherwise OD pairs are very tricky), also looking at just Montgomery county and DC, and expanding the tool to its maximum range (zero to 293 miles) it’s missing about half the total workers in each of those. Also, tracts are referenced, but that set is not reported at tract.  I welcome your thoughts.
