Subject: TRB Centennial - Tell Us Our Story - Please Publicize and
Participate
Dear Stacey,
I am writing to you today as Chair of ABJ30 with a request that you forward
this email to all members and friends of your committee, and that you
encourage them to participate in the activity described below.
TRB would like to get as many responses as possible to the following three
questions, which are part of TRB's April, May, and June "Tell Us 'Our'
Story" Centennial Challenge.
* What drew you to transportation community, and what keeps you here?
ew-you-to-the-transportation-community-and-what-keeps-you-here>
* What impact do you hope to have on the world and how is the
Transportation Research Board helping you make that impact?
ct-do-you-hope-to-have-on-the-world-and-how-is-TRB-helping-you-make-that-imp
act>
* What is your vision for the Transportation Research Board 100 years
from now?
your-vision-of-TRB-100-years-from-now>
The deadline to respond to any or all of these questions is July 1, 2020.
The TRB "Tell Us 'Our' Story" Centennial Challenge is designed to allow as
many of TRB's volunteers and friends as possible to participate in the TRB
Centennial Celebration through the submission of their stories, which make
up the TRB story.
In addition to posting responses to these questions on its website and
publicizing them via its social media channels, TRB will be producing
banners that will display some of the responses to these questions at
various 2021 Annual Meeting venues.
Responses to these questions will dovetail well with the theme for the 2021
Annual Meeting, which is Launching a New Century of Mobility and Quality of
Life.
The links above give the option to submit a response in writing (200 words
or less) or provide a YouTube link to a short video (60 seconds or less)
respondents take with a smart phone. If submitting a written response,
respondents are asked to upload a photo of themselves that will be displayed
with their quote.
More information on the Tell Us "Our" Story Challenge is available on TRB's
Centennial Website at
https://trbcentennial.nationalacademies.org/tell-us-our-story
If folks have question or need more information, they should feel free to
contact me at Rhouston(a)nas.edu <mailto:Rhouston@nas.edu> .

ABJ30 Members and Friends,
Shawn Turner (Shawn-Turner(a)tamu.edu) wants to know if anyone is
interested in organizing an ADUS workshop for the 2009 TRB Annual
Meeting -
If you have an idea for a workshop - please let me know as soon as
possible -
Tom Palmerlee send out a reminder, workshop proposals are due from
committee chairs on June 1. Here is the information that you'll need to
provide:
o Workshop Title
o Workshop length (Half Day/Full Day)
o Description (A paragraph description is sufficient)
o Sponsoring and/or Co-Sponsoring committees
o Committee Contact
W. David Lee, Chair of the SCOP Subcommittee on Research, is looking for
new NCHRP Draft Problem Statements - please email any ideas for the
Committee to develop into a proposal.
NCHRP 8-36 is intended for quick response research projects that will
improve analytical methods and tools for statewide and metropolitan
planning. The expected cost is under $100,000. Drafts need to be
submitted by July 11, 2008. An 8-36 problem statement does not need the
level of detail of a formal NCHRP proposal. The format is a one-page
problem statement with:
* Title
* Problem Statement
* Research Objective
* Cost
* Time Required
Below are some recent suggestions for "emerging data needs" that our
Committee could develop into formal research statements for the TRB
website and submittals for funding:
1) Using assessor's data to gather accurate counts of
numbers of housing units on parcels of land. An accurate count of
Housing Units is important to augment census/ACS data. A synthesis
project is needed to determine "best practices" for improving the
quality of these data (e.g., through mandates or incentives) and data
sharing procedures between agencies (e.g., assessors and MPOs).
2) Data needs for integrating aviation-related
transport activities into mainstreaming transportation planning. Recent
publications, such as TCRP 83, provide strategies for linking public
transit to large airports, yet there is little available data to
evaluate the effectiveness of such strategies for local planning.
3) New software modeling packages (e.g.,
microsimulation and visualization tools) require parking lot and parking
space data, including prices charged, duration of stay, etc. A
synthesis project is needed to examine "best practices" for collecting,
archiving and updating parking data.
4) New ways to facilitate the delivery of data (and
metadata), including portals with real time data streams and data fusion
opportunities.
Please let me know if you would like to help expand these problem
statements or if you have additional ideas for development. The list of
ideas from our last annual meeting and the outcome of the three most
important issues shared at the Data Retreat are also "on the table" for
further development (see attached). Hope to have the summary from the
Data Retreat to share soon.
Don't forget - Early Bird Special for our mid-year meeting at NATMAC
expires May 6th!!

Over the last few months I have gotten involved with an organization
that links users, producers and disseminators of government statistical
data together. The organization goes by the name of the Association of
Public Data Users and attached is their February newletter as a sample
of what the organization is about. While the organization tends to
focus more on Census and Economic data my intent is to bring our
transportation world closer to them and their world closer to ours.

Thought I would pass this along. It looks like just another avenue for
finding data is closing. According to their website "Due to budgetary
constraints, the Economic Indicators service
(http://www.economicindicators.gov) will be discontinued effective March
1, 2008". Somewhat ironic is that this website is basically a
compilation of links for BEA and Census that are all in one spot. I am
not sure how much could really be saved by eliminating this site.

I just thought I would pass this along. It seems pretty clear that our
Travel Data Users Forum where we investigated what would happen to our
travel behavior given the rising cost of energy really hit the mark.
Nathan Erlbaum just passed along a link a newspaper article where he had
to speak to the topic and his presentation from the Forum.
http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080203/BIZ/8020303…
I also gave a webinar presentation last week as part of the TMIP program
which can be found and viewed at
http://tmip.fhwa.dot.gov/discussions/webinars/archive/01292008_trb/. Of
the many things I covered I did spend a good portion of my time on the
Forum.
finally, given the demand that I have had for the slides from the forum
I have them posted at

Nandu asked me to pass this along. Keep in mind that syntheses topics
are like TCRP proposals in that anyone can submit.

Attached is the draft agenda for our meeting. Please note that the
meeting will be Monday night, January 14, 2008. It will only be 2 hours
long so we have a rather restricted agenda. Of primary importance for
the committee will be an open discussion on issues facing the committee.
Specifically, we are being asked to define our committee's
research, data, and information system-related issues and priorities.
Our committee's issues will then be discuss and feed into a Retreat that
the Data Section Chairs are having in March. The retreat was discussed
in the newsletter that I distributed earlier today and also attached is
some more background on it. For now we need to be thinking about what
are our key issues.
