NATMEC 2006 Improving Traffic Monitoring Data for Transportation
Decision-making is encouraging interested individuals to submit
abstracts to be considered for presentation at the 2006 conference in
Minneapolis, June 4-7, 2006. The conference will be a forum for
exchange and dissemination of information related to the collection,
management, and use of monitored traffic data in all applications.
The conference planning committee has developed a set of sessions based
on systematic input from traffic professionals and from past conference
participants. A listing of the proposed sessions and descriptions along
with the conference details can be found at
http://www.trb.org/conferences/natmec/sessions.pdf. The planning
committee is specifically seeking participation in these sessions and
the submission process will ask you to choose a session. Abstracts on
other topics will also be considered for inclusion in the conference
program.
Submittal Process
You will need to prepare and abstract in file, using Word or similar
software. Submit abstracts to
http://www.trb.org/submissions/default.asp?event=188. After logging in
you will need to enter the software as an Author and then click on
Create a new paper. You will be asked for a title, short abstract
and to identify which session best fits you submittal. After completing
this screen you will be given another screen and asked to upload your
word processing file with the abstract. You MUST upload a file with the
abstract. This is a redundancy with the software that can not be
changed and we apologize for this redundancy.
Abstracts should not be more than 500 words in length and should clearly
convey the material that will be presented and relevance to the session
topic. Individual presentations will be approximately 20 minutes in
length; panel presentations may vary in length. Formal papers are
welcome but are not required. Sales presentations on specific products
or services will not be accepted.
Abstract Deadline: August 26

Ed - isn't that the way it is with most data sets? The closer you are,
the more your heartburn. According to Horwood's Laws of Data (thanks to
Mark Hallenbeck for making these available), Law #4 says that "The
respectability of existing data grows with elapsed time and distance
from the data source to the investigator."

However, if you hire someone and don't look
too closely you will get fine data set. I probably got to close to
mine....
We are in discussions about doing an external survey here in KC and have
had the same concerns brought up. May look at license capture.
Anyone done one of those recently?

Maybe David Pearson will relate the Texas experience - seems like they
did a survey in the past 5 years based on license capture and, at some
point, was talking with the ACLU.
My opinion is that perception is everything - if the public thinks you
are trying to be sneaky (even though you may not be), they will call you
on it and you will get bad press/public opposition. If you coordinate
with the local media and other agencies in advance, tell them why you
need the data, tell them how you plan to protect privacy, it seems like
you might get a better reception by the public.
