Use of Private Sector and Blended Private–Public Sector Speed Data by Public Agencies for Planning and Operations

This workshop will address the use of private sector speed data by public agencies. Sometimes this speed data is wholly generated by the private sector; in other cases, the private sector data is blended with public sector data. Often, this private sector speed data is collected and disseminated as real-time traveler information; however, when archived unrestrictedly, this speed data has potential to be used for numerous operational and planning applications.

  1. What types of data do you provide (speed, travel time, meta data, etc)
  2. Please describe your overall data collection process (sources, aggregation, fusion, dissemination, etc)
  3. Do you have procedures to compensate for drops in reliability or accuracy?
  4. What are your prices based on (days, coverage, aggregation, miles, etc)?

Other questions you may have of your public agency peers may include the following that will sure be discussed:

  1. What type of data and performance measures were found to be most applicable and cost effective for your use?
  2. What was found to be the most attractive elements of that data in deciding to acquire?
  3. What have you done or plan to do to validate data accuracy?
  4. How are you using the data for either operations or planning?
  5. Do you plan to acquire data on a regular basis and if so what interval?
